367775 2005-06-28 23:33:00 We make alot of overseas calls , and my w00t algebra skills shows me that it will only take 17mins of calls inorder for the service to become effective , yet im wondering if its any good
2 years ago we tried Iconnecthere over 56kb and it wasnt to bad , yet we got rid of it after a while , now however we have DSL ( 256/128) and the mounting phone bills and making us once again to consider this option,

What im wondering is if the current Slingshot VOIP service is any good and if its worth a try , Has anyone tried it etc

367776 2005-06-29 01:06:00 I haven't used it so can't comment but I use Skype on a daily basis and it's excellent
I also use the new Spontania plugin for video in conjunction with skype and it works very well indeed (thrashes the MSN Webcam in terms of reliability and quality)
If you want to make PC to Landline calls, blocks of calls can be purchased at very good rates although I don't think all countries including within New Zealand calls are supported yet
Also is capable of voice messaging but cellphone calls are still just as expensive
Maybe you could use a combination of Slingshot & Skype
And of course Skype is FREE!!

367777 2005-06-29 01:19:00 Skype defintely supports calls within New Zealand, I use it all the time... It's NZ $0.023/min, for landlines, and around NZ$0.4 for mobile. The quality is average, not much delay. However, it is still slightly sub-standard compared to phone.

But calling to Hong Kong, and the UK, which I do, the call quality is right on par with phone. UK is NZ$0.023/min as well, darn cheap....

I use SkypeIn as well, which means I bought a UK number for Euro30 for a whole year. My friends in UK, and our relatives just call that "local UK number", and gets connected to my computer. Real good, and they don't have to pay an extra penny, and I don't have to care about min costs...

367778 2005-08-17 12:16:00 i use skype to make calls to US & India most of the time and the quality is great if both ends have highspeed connection. krival96 (7003)
367779 2005-08-26 02:58:00 Yes, I put it in last week initially using the softphone option with a mic that came with an old PC and an old set of earphones, sounded good to me and the person on the other end said was fine too. Good service and support from SS.

Then purchased a cheap headset on TM with boom mic etc, but quality is not as good esp. if the volume is too high on either mic or ears the quality is poor.
Using 2mps connection.

The main issue is how much data gets moved, Slingshot initially said about a meg an hour, but is is more like 20 meg an hour.

Will be interesting to monitor the actual cost of the extra data use.

I spend most of the day on the phone, including overseas, a call to Fiji this morning that was $7 on VOIP would have been $30 on landline. Great reporting functions for tracking calls.

367780 2005-09-06 21:40:00 I have now been advised that the drop in quality is beacuase bitstream is not so good for VOIP, when I first used VOIP I was still on an Orcan Jetstream plan which is best for VOIP. Slingshot say it is OK quality, but others who don't know you are using VOIP now comment on the quality.

Only Xtra have jetsream type services now with all other ISP's only being offered bitstream.
