368384 2005-07-01 00:44:00 Hi,
I thought I was blase enough not to need F1 help with my old 'pooter though I check every day) but recently I was asked why a window came up suggesting she compress the e mails to save space etc- and I advised that she had to empty sic, sent, deleted, and most of the in box when it got to 1000 messages especially.

Ha ! now I got the same, and other than I found 897 files in my deleted box ( even when I had set that box to delete on start up) and the other boxes only had about 300 in total in them why was I asked this?--- and as I clicked"O K" where did they go to?

I have got 10 gb of free space left in C drive and 1 gb in D drive

I ran a search but there is no folder with anything like this

... and as I clicked"O K" where did they go to?Sorry but you have lost me here, where did what go? Have you lost all your emails or just the ones you had in the deleted folder?

And the message was to compress folders?

When an email is deleted, only the reference to its location in the folder is deleted in the folder "table of contents" but the space that the email occupied in the database file remains.

Compressing just rewrites the emails remaining to better utilise the space, effectively eliminating the space left by the old (and unreferenced in the table of contents) emails. Hence then removing the deleted email file completely and making the database file smaller.

368387 2005-07-03 08:46:00 Hi Jen and Godfather,
sorry I am late - but the Sabbath has it's reponsibiltes that, from a long way back have to be attended to.
This answer of Godfather in theory answers my query-- and as I have,-for -Jen, Windows XP, Outlook Express etc mean that I clicked O K and though no e mails of mine disappeared - my question was how do I de-compress if I need to, and from where do I do that.
To follow on from my sister-in-law's query this afternoon she tells me since I clicked O K and compressed my files- my, sic, postcardchess statement that there is a chess move etc, waiting (from me)----had all the font been made smaller and also the little windows from that "postcard chess" game also was smaller-her question was "was that a compression taking effect?"
I have not a clue what to do to next:- 1,
decompress and/or make her font etc larger ( she is like me, needing glasses, as she too has reached that "certain age" when glasses are needed)

Carry on at least with my set up which does NOT show any change after clicking "O K- compress
