| 368312 | 2005-06-30 22:21:00 | I would like to network two computers, but only use one monitor, one keyboard, and one mouse. Hopefully, the second computer will have Linux on it for me to play with. It presently has Win ME on it but with a 8 meg HDD there should be room for a Linux partition. :) Id prefer not to use the LPT1 ports as my printer is on one. Maybe even a split screen desktop so I can flick from one computer to the other without swapping cables etc. Any suggestions? :) |

| 368314 | 2005-06-30 22:35:00 | The network is cheap and easy - Just buy a crossover cable from Dick Smith (and network cards if you don't already have one in each computer - the generic $15 ones will do) and plug it in. For sharing a monitor, keyboard, etc. you will need a KVM. These come in various forms and prices depending on what you want to do with them. If you decide to go without the KVM, you can admin your Linux box from your windows box using SSH and a Xwin client. The free versions of these are putty and XDeep respectively, but I prefer the official ssh client for windows and XWin32. EDIT: I really don't like windows ME. I would suggest move everything on your ME box to your other windows box, and give Linux the full 8 gig. I assume your ME computer is getting a bit old, so you probably won't be able to run the latest mainstream distros. Post the specs and I'm sure someone with more linux knoledge than me will suggest a distro that would suit your needs. |

| 368319 | 2005-07-01 05:26:00 | VNC works brilliantly. You can have a server running always on the Linux box, and a client run from a Windows box as required. You can have Putty on the Windows box, too. And that's all free. You just set up the Linux to run then unplug the monitor, mouse and keyboard. | Graham L (2) | ||
| 368320 | 2005-07-09 22:36:00 | Ok, I’ve finally got my KVM Switch and got it all hooked up, but whilst once it’s working it goes fine, there is one little hick-up, which goes like this . Upon Power-On the lights on the keyboard flash and Number Lock stays on but the HDD light comes on and stays on . There is no traditional beep from the box and the Monitor stays in stand-by . That’s it . However, if I hit the reset button everything bursts into life and we have a perfectly normal start-up . Other than this little annoyance everything works fine . Any suggestions? |
