368354 2005-06-30 23:18:00 I was planning on getting using AVG as my anti-virus and was wondering what you guys thought about this Anti-virus program.

Do you guys have better recommendations if this anti-virus isn't up to par.

Thank you.

368355 2005-06-30 23:20:00 i think AVG is very good Prescott (11)
368356 2005-06-30 23:25:00 Well, a friend of mine download a trainer yesterday. He likes to pull them apart and see the coding and stuff.
This looked sus to him due the odd way it was packed apparently. He had Nortons and ran it to check. Clean. So he updated Bortons and ran it again. Clean but it said there may have been a possible trojan but it wasn't sure. He downloaded and ran AVG. Clean.
Then he had a hunt around for one he could run from a DOS command line. He found F-Prot. It found the virus.

368357 2005-06-30 23:25:00 There is a very lengthy thread on the various free anti-virus programs here. pressf1.co.nz Greven (91)
368358 2005-06-30 23:27:00 free version or pro??

avgfree is widly used by people here. a few little glitchs to sort, mainly with the email setup but otherwise quite good.

the other good free one is avast which has more features (OS depending).

there was a avg vers avast thread not long back. have a search for it ;)

frankly either of them give some of the commercial products a hiding. why pay for a crud one when you can have a good one for free.

368359 2005-06-30 23:28:00 I like it
Been using it for years with no problems, seems to do the job as well as others
Matter of personal preference really as there are others that do a good job as well.
Most important thing to remember though is an Antivirus proggy is only one of the tools a PC user should have in his arsenal.
It should be used in conjunction with Critical Windows updates, a firewall and a couple of good Spyware tools such as Spybot & Ad-Aware (both free)
Also updating the Antivirus definitions regularly is most important (Amazing how many people don't do this)
And of course the best tool at your disposal is common sense!

368360 2005-07-01 09:15:00 AVG Anti Virus is excellent, and the update files are small which is a blessing when on Dial-up.
If you are you are using Zone Alarm fire wall, turn off the Email scan as it sometimes clashes with AVG trying to do the same job.

368361 2005-07-01 09:36:00 I've given AVG a good work out on "certain" cough cough w . . . z sites, purely in the interests of science of course, using Windows 95 and IE5 . 5 which are more vulnerable than later OS, and AVG picked up Trojans left right and centre from pop up windows, and from downloaded zipped k . . g . n files which had trojans of some sort in them . Not that I would normally do such things but it is the only way I can think of for testing AVG

F-prot dos version is really good and free . It can all be loaded onto a Win98 boot CD for checking without having to boot into Windows . Ideal for taking along to someones computer that has been infected when you get a cry for help . It seems a bit slower than AVG though .

368362 2005-07-01 09:45:00 I've used AVG for a couple of years, I used Nortons 2001 a while back and found it to be a resource hog. Not only that but You have to pay for updates after a year bob_doe_nz (92)

It seems a bit slower than AVG though.Yes I too tested a lot of anti-virus programmes on those sites (again in the name of science ... heck we beginning to sound like the Japanese whalers).

I found BitDefender quite capable of standing up to most (not all though) of them. AVG has always performed well, but I have noticed in 7 there are some changes (and not necessarily for the better).
For instance it seems to pick up phantom viruses that other programmes don't seem to be able to find, says they are removed, only for them to pop up 5 minutes later.

The other thing I don't like about it is that it sabotages your computer to do free updates when it wants, which can be a pain if you are on dialup and in the middle of a 40MB download.
