369127 2005-07-04 02:59:00 Today, I pulled my machine out to swap some cables (while it was still live). It turned itself off. I thought it was just the power cable and replaced it. Turned the machine of, tapped it and it shut itself off again.

Opened the case, checked all the connections and stuff and it all looked in order. Turned the PC on, tapped it on the top and it went off again (sometimes with a high pitched whine).

I have heard 2 possible explanations..
* loose cord in the Power Supply
* loose screw under the motherboard that might be shorting it out

Any other ideas/suggestions would be appreciated.

369128 2005-07-04 05:05:00 When you say live, do you mean turned on and running or just plugged in? and what cables did you pull out? Agent_24 (57)
369129 2005-07-04 05:20:00 If you mean by live, it was running then you've probably damaged something.
Like the PSU. Try another one it it.

369130 2005-07-04 05:24:00 If it whines before shutting down, the power supply is probably being overloaded, and shutting itself down. A PSU can stand abuse better than most other components. ;)

Check that the cables "replaced" are the right way round.

369131 2005-07-04 05:30:00 I was only swapping speaker cables around.

The cables that I replaced were the external power ones and they only go in 1 direction. Everything else looks fine.

It's a 550w power supply - it shouldn't have problems with all my stuff. :p

I'm getting a second opinion tonight and then I'll take it in.

369132 2005-07-04 05:34:00 maybe it's your speakers that are whining? Agent_24 (57)

550ws can still be damaged. I'd check it out, after all its providing power to evrything in the case - I'd be paranoid.

369134 2005-07-04 05:42:00 I might do that...if it is, it'll be the second PSU I've been through... matthew-h (8470)
369135 2005-07-04 06:01:00 Erm, check the power on switch lead - it may be dangling exposed near the case, require a tap to close the circuit and trigger the switch :) Growly (6)
