| 369062 | 2005-07-03 15:49:00 | Try here (www.google.com), it would help a little more if I knew what you were trying to do, using R is not much help, are you trying to repair windows?? | Rob99 (151) | ||

| 369066 | 2005-07-04 05:58:00 | The use of recovery console is often limited, because it can, although very powerfully, do very little to a messed up install. It is useful for manually starting and stopping services, or replacing single files - or even file recovery if you're REALLY REALLY REALLY REALLY desperate. So, find out only how to do what you need to do. It takes a google search, and you wont be forced to wade through the rest (which, might I add, is simply like a shell wil a few more additions). |

Thanks While I know how to use a the recovery console which mostly uses a version of MSDos I will own up to not knowing much about the electronics on my car. I build computers but don't feel really inferior about TV and VCR and programming them to record at a certain time. I can do it but it takes time for me. Don't feel inferior. Try giving the members here more info about what you are trying to do. Using "R" on the third screen after booting off a cd to repair a WinXP will not put you to a recovery screen. |

| 369068 | 2005-07-05 22:55:00 | I was trying to use Command prompt after my 2 PCs stopped receiving email. But then I remembered that this happened after I downloaded free screesavers. Uninstalling them fixed all. But looking for knowhow I found a site PCStats with lots of information. Looks as the best site so far. What you think? |

| 369069 | 2005-07-06 11:03:00 | Supplement to the thread. Just today I learned about IBM rescue and recovery program. It is being used as a suplement to System restore. It requires to keep backups up todate. I feel that external HDD with mirror copy of the master HDD can be better alternative. (See PCStats site www.pcstats.com) Can anyone comment on that? |

I have two physical hard drives and use Norton Ghost to make a mirror copy of the boot drive to a removable drive. System restore is disabled on my system. Backups or rather copies of the important files go off to a DVD or CD depending on file sizes. These are stored off site. |
