368976 2005-07-03 11:50:00 It sounds like slingshot are using packet shaping to limit p2p traffic. I've heard reports of Orcon doing the same with their unlimited plan. I don't think Telecom do packet shaping.
I'm currently on a telecom plan being resold by Orcon & as far as I can tell they aren't limiting p2p traffic.

368977 2005-07-14 12:49:00 I've heard that Slingshot does say in their Terms of Service that at peak traffic they can limit bandwidth usage (not that I read it or anything), and I believe that they do that in the evenings to p2p users. I'm also with slingshot 256 unlimited, and in the evenings is when my bittorrents slow right down. overnight I can get around 22kbs or more, and during the day around 16kbs, but in the evenings I'm lucky to get 3kbs lately.

Normal downloads are still at 32kbs though any time of the day.

I recommend leaving your p2p on overnight.

just my 2 cents but I think that this is a very dirty tactic for any isp to be using. Granted most p2p programs are used by the bearded fellows with eye patches and peg legs (as well as bittorrent) but bittorrent is proven to be a way foward for the internet. It reduces server loads, cuts cost for a company hosting a file (patchs etc) and allows users to get the file quickly because there are not the qeues that come with the likes of fileplanet and a new patch/mod*gags*, those servers can have literaly hours of waiting time before you even beging to download.

I think that it's wrong for ISPs to be limiting the trafic to a service that is actually providing a way foward for the internet (and giving us something to do with that juicy bandwidth). If things like this keep happening New Zealand will stay in the internet dark ages, years behing the likes of china and the USA. Eg. When was VOIP gone to be rolled out to New Zealand? at least a year ago was promised by Wosh. Hopefully wired country will finally save rual NZ from dial-up prison and the shackels of telecom phone bills.
