| 368802 | 2005-07-03 02:43:00 | Ok guy’s I’m already to embark on Linux for the first time. I’ve dug out my old P2 computer with 128meg RAM, 4 gig Quantum Bigfoot HDD, Win Modem as a bonus, so already to go. (Did I hear someone laugh?) :mad: Friends and associates have been less than kind when I suggested I might have a look at this Linux and for their part I’ve been spoilt with choice with different systems to choose from. So what’s it to be guys? Knoppix 3.4 Morphix 0.4 or Ubuntu no Version but 2005. These so called friends have the gall to suggest they are all a waste of time but I’d love to prove them wrong! :) |

| 368803 | 2005-07-03 03:12:00 | I'd go with Knoppix out of that list. ;) That's one I've found usable (by me). I've used only the Live CD version of each of those ... my preference for an installed Linux so far is Mandrake. | Graham L (2) | ||
| 368804 | 2005-07-03 04:30:00 | I would go with ubuntu it is designed to be installed to HDD, unlike the other 2 which are both live Cds (but can be installed to HDD) and i personally found Ubuntu very easy to use and the Ubuntu forum are really good (as good as pressF1, i would say). Knoppix live CD would be realy good for testing your hardware prior to installing any linux OS well thats my 2 cents worth |

| 368806 | 2005-07-03 07:10:00 | I would have to go with Knoppix on this one.. Ubuntu is a bit harder to setup. However, you may find that Ubuntu picks up your Win modem better |

These so called friends have the gall to suggest they are all a waste of time but I*d love to prove them wrong! :) All are free as far as I know - Ubuntu can be shipped to you for free (CD) from Switzerland if you wish, or can be downloaded for free like Knoppix and Morphix . Then new Knoppix 4 . 0 is out . So why don't you try them all (and also any of the other ~200 distros out there)? Persistence, an open mind and a willingness to experiment will gett you vey far . |

| 368811 | 2005-07-04 07:23:00 | Ok guys, here’s where we’re up to . I did as you suggested and booted Knoppix off the Disk . No problems, it seemed to go and look fine except for not being able to see the Win Modem . OK, that wasn’t unexpected and I figured if I could get over that problem it looked quite good . Onto Morphix: seemed hellishly slow compared to Knoppix and couldn’t see the Modem either . But, on shutdown it showed a list of errors a Kangaroo couldn’t jump over . There was screen after screen of errors but I couldn’t pause the screen to get the details . Dahhhhh! Onto Ubuntu: Loaded this onto a nice clean disk and boy did it take its time . I honestly could have loaded Win ME three times formatting in between . Anyway, you don’t have to install the operating system every time so I can live with that . Now, this little fellow recognised everything, correctly, the first time . Chipset, Northbridge, Southbridge, AND Modem . BUT it don’t go that well! There are problems! Now, before I go into great detail as to what don’t go It’s probably better to tell you about two significant ERROR MESSAGES . Unfortunately, the damn thing only stutters on them and doesn’t give one time to write down all the morbid details . Like earlier, there seems no way to halt or pause the system . However, here is the guts of it: MODPROBE: FATAL: pciehp………………Operation Not Permitted . MODPROBE: FATAL: shpchp………………… . . Operation Not Permitted . Now, my experience of Windows suggests that a “Fatal Error” is just that, but Ubuntu carries on manfully . :groan: Anyway, if I can sort the “Fatality” out the rest might come together . The other thing that made me laugh was when trying to find Help on how to set up my Dial-Up Internet connection, it wanted to refer me to some Web-Page . Call me stupid, but I would have thought if I could get to their Web-Page then I wouldn’t need that help?????? :rolleyes: Never mind, it’s character building stuff! (Those “B” mates that threw these disks at me are running around telling anyone who will listen that I’m into some form of Masochism . ) :mad: |
