2005-07-02 22:33:00 | Is there test software/hardware available to the average Joe Bloggs to test CD Reader/Writers? The question arises because some disks Ive written have become very marginal over time. They are not damaged in any way and have indeed been treated with kid gloves. What I want to establish is whether the burn laser is down on grunt, or the reader is down on grunt, or Ive purchased some shonkey disks. At the moment I have severe reservations about backing up important data to CDs. Im sort of hoping there is a software package that will write to a CD at various levels and then read back and do a comparison of readability. You could then keep the comparison and check at a future date if you felt something was on its way out. If there is nothing available could someone attend to the matter by the end of the week? ;)

2005-08-01 04:11:00 | I have been using anything going but so far I haven’t had a Sony fail . I burn with Nero that came with the CDRW and burn at 8X . Life expectancy seems less than two years for many disks . I thought it might be the reader but when they go no computer can read them . There fine initially . Also, they’re in perfect condition . Just thought there may be a test available?

2005-08-01 04:34:00 | Did u finalise the cdrw, before u tried it in another pc besides your own pc? I have a feeling this is why wherever u put it in, it wont work . Unless 1: The pc you're putting the cdrw in, has something like Directcd/INCD installed maybe . 2: Or it has some kind of UDF reader installed . What are u using the cdrw for in Nero? Data cd's? Or if the CDRW hasnt been finalised, if the other PC/s have Nero, (if youre doing a data cd) and kept it opened (multisession), Nero on the other system should see whats on it and let u add to it, if need be .

2005-08-01 04:46:00 | Multisession data CD's Speedy . Work fine for 6 Months and then bad things start happening . Not ideal for backups .

2005-08-01 04:51:00 | BUT did u finalise it? Its better to use CDR for data since u can finalise them and wont be able to format them. Then they'll work on any other system.
