368653 2005-07-02 05:43:00 Have just been reading the article on LCD monitors in PC World.

What is DVI? To use it do I have to change my graphics card?

Does it do anything for picture quality?

Is it just some fancy extra made to get more money out me?

Why don't people who write these reviews explain what they are talking about? Not everyone is a computer expert.

368654 2005-07-02 06:00:00 You can find out more about DVI in this thread (www.pressf1.co.nz).

Your graphics card will need a DVI port on it to be able to use it. Have a look at the back of your computer where your monitor is plugged in and see if there is another port next to the one your monitor is plugged into. It will be a bit bigger in size with more holes in it. There is a picture of one in Jen's link in the above thread.

368655 2005-07-02 06:01:00 DVI is Digital Vidoe Interface.

VGA is an analog signal, DVI is full digital.

DVI gives a better picture in a LCD monitor. LCD is a digital system, your video card is digital... with VGA and LCD the video card converts the image to analong and then the monitor converts it to digital for display, with DVI its digital all the way. and so no quality loss.

to use DVI you need a graphics card with DVI output.

368656 2005-07-02 06:03:00 DVI is Digital Video Interface. CRT screens and some (less expensive) LCD screens are analogue.

My understanding is that the video signal starts out as digital then is converted to analogue for CRT screens, losing quality in the conversion process.

If you have a DVI capable LCD screen the signal is direct digital to digital, so there is no loss in the quality of the signal as it hasn't been converted.

DVI screens have a different plug/pin array to analogue. You will need a video card that has a DVI connection, but most DVI capable screens can be used with an analogue video card... it's just that the picture quality on the screen will be slightly lower than with DVI.

It would pay to check the screen you're buying to see if it can run on both DVI and analogue.

If you want to get a new video card at the same time the Nividea ones have a great display set up program for colour/brightness/saturation etc.

368657 2005-07-02 08:12:00 However my friend who has a dual LCD and dual card tried it, and we couldn't tell the difference. Maybe just me and him? pctek (84)
368658 2005-07-02 09:36:00 I tried both with my Samsung and noticed some improvement with DVI... not sure it would be worth the difference in cost for a DVI monitor+video card unless you're serious/have money to burn Shortcircuit (1666)
368659 2005-07-02 10:19:00 I use a Philips 150B4 lcd screen. No DVI input available on the monitor.

My video card has both VGA out and DVI out.

You need to check that the new monitor will accept DVI input and that the video card has DVI output.

I am not planning on changing my LCD screen in the near future. This is a 15 inch screen and it beats the poo out of the 17 inch CRT I had before.

Recently I saw a 17 inch LCD connected to DVI on a FX5700 Nvidia agp video card. This was on a similar system box to what I have. I have the same AGP card which is a Winfast A360TD by Leadtek. Both of us use an AMD CPU like a 3200+. He has a different motherboard to the one I use. He does not play MS Flight sim but uses MS Links. This is a Golf simulator. I use this one as well but he has Links 2003 and I use Links 2002. I can not see the difference.

If you are thinking about a new LCD screen then I would recommend Philips or any other you can find with a zero dead pixel warranty. Don't forget the DVI input with the right video card.

I can't help commenting here about the flight sim problems you have had. I don't think for a minute a new screen will help with playing the game.

First go buy new video card making sure it has both VGA and DVI out. Then buy new monitor making sure it has DVI in.

Sorry to make a comment as I might be jumped on again.

368660 2005-07-02 10:32:00 I was thinking of the Viewsonic Lcd. Seems to be OK .
My card is a Radeon 9800 pro. Has that got DVI?

Go turn your system box around. Have a look at where your current monitor is plugged into. Are there any other holes where you can plug things into? You have likely plugged your CRT into a VGA output. Have you got another ( usually grey )port on the same card? You may have TIVO on the same video card.

I once upon a time had a Viewsonic CRT Monitor and this died within eight months. I had a replacement and that died about three years later.

Bear in mind I have not used a Radeon 9800 or a Viewsonic LCD.
