| 368812 | 2005-07-04 12:42:00 | You can sort out those Errors on an installed system. If you like Ubuntu, go for it - Its been drumming up a heap of support lately! The errors are most likely it trying to load drivers that arent for your system. Usually WARNING's are just that, WARNING's, and nothing to be too alarmed about. :) |

You can get rid of those errors by following the instructions in post #7 here (ubuntuforums.org). You might want to check out this Unofficial Ubuntu 5.04 Starter Guide (ubuntuguide.org) or Unofficial Ubuntu 4.10 Starter Guide (ubuntuguide.org) if you are using the previous release of Ubuntu for helpful tips. :) |

| 368814 | 2005-07-04 23:47:00 | Thanks everyone, Googleing found references to these errors and it would appear they are of no importance. As you say, just the system trying to load drivers for something I dont have. (3D Video in this case) Puts a new interpretation on the word Fatal though doesnt it? :) Anyway, well carry on to see if we if I can get the Modem & my dial-up connection working. As I said in an earlier post the Modem is correctly identified but Im struggling to get it to work. Might be because I told the Wizard it was on Com. 3, which it is in Windows, but maybe not with Ubuntu. Ill try Com. 1 or 2. (If I can uninstall or reinstall it) :) |

| 368815 | 2005-07-05 21:47:00 | Update: Got everything up and running with the exception of the Win Modem that I expected trouble with anyway . Must say Im quite impressed, especially with OpenOffice . Back to the WinModem: Googleing the Internet on the subject suggests the problem is more Legal than technical . (Patents, Copyrights and agreements between Conexant and Microsoft) However, there was one outfit that would let you download a driver to test it but it would only run at 14k until you paid them and then they would update it to 56K . Well, one can buy a 56k Modem from Dick Smiths for $28, which will work on Linux or Windows . Anyway, the bottom line is does anybody know for sure if a driver exists that will work on a WinModem with a ubuntu operating system? By the way, have any of you Linux experts tried ubuntu? Looks very good to a guy with two days experience on Linux . :) |

There's a site specialising in it, but i cant remember where, nor can i be bothered dusting of the computer that might have it bookmarked . :) Wheather there's drivers for your specific win modem is another matter . :stare: You should be fine, but theres never any garantees . . . . . . . . . This Linux user has tried Ubuntu breifly, for little more than an hour . i was having a play with it on the day i went from FC3 to MEPIS . I found it was a very tidy and self contained system . If i were to put together a machine for office and internet use, Ubuntu would definatly be in the race . However, allthough i may have missed something, i found it annoying in the way it insisted on repartitioning the HDD . Fortunatly it left my alone my last partition, hda5, that i use for "/home", but it decided to to put "/swap" after "/" where as every other distro i tried wants /swap first . When i installed MEPIS i was lazy and got it to use the partitions as set up by Ubuntu . I was tempted to stay with Ubuntu, but Murray P had sent me a MEPIS CD, and i was atleast going to try it . Having installed MEPIS i was happy, and stuck with it . Not that that means MEPIS is better than Ubuntu . I never got enough time to check Ubuntu out properly out, let alone try to break . . . er, i mean customise it . ;) Maybe on my next machine? :D |
