369076 2005-07-03 22:14:00 My boy has been unable to find his external USB drive on 98SE to do some backing up. It works ok on his XP one. Both pc's 800mhz.Both USB1.Any suggestions, please. Neil McC (178)
369077 2005-07-03 22:32:00 You'll probably need to install drivers for it on 98SE
What brand of drive is it
Check the manufacturers website for drivers
Install drivers 1st then plug USB Cable or flash drive in

369078 2005-07-03 22:37:00 Hi,

The USB drive should have come with a CD with drivers for installing it on Windows 98. If you can't find the CD, jump on the USB drive manufacturer's website - they usually have downloadable drivers available - or do a google search. I have a Kingston 128MB drive and it came with a CD for installing on Windows 98 machines.

Windows XP and 2000 will instantly recognise almost all external USB drives - Windows 98 was not as clever :-)

369079 2005-07-05 01:20:00 Thanks for your replies. The external housing came with a cd, but we can only see USB2 drivers on it. The hard drive is an old 3Gb at the moment, so assume we have to find drivers for that? When we change the drive later, does that mean we have to find different drivers again? Thanks. Neil McC (178)
369080 2005-07-05 01:24:00 USB 2 is backwards compatable with 1 - try them and see - no harm will be done, if they don't work. Peter H (220)

The drivers are for the USB part not the hard drive.
