369643 2005-07-05 07:08:00 Hi I have a IBM 300GL given to me and want to get it running for the kids. Its a P2 266. I have formated it and now want to install Win 98. When I boot it from a Win startup disk it locks up after it reaches:
Load driver by Oak Tech
AIC-6260/6360/6370 ASPI Manager for DOS.
It didn't have a CD drive original and I have installed it to load Windows.
I have checked the connections, Master/Slave jumpers, BIOS settings, tried three different CD drives.
Any ideas on what to try next?
Thanks

369644 2005-07-05 11:01:00 Interesting. Thats a scsi driver. I doubt you've connected a scsi CD?
What is the BIOS set to as the first boot device???

It should be CDRom.
Or you could set it to floppy drive and boot off a Win98 boot disk instead.

369645 2005-07-06 06:50:00 Thanks for your reply. I checked the BIOS and it has no settings for start up sequence. I guess by default to looks at the floppy then the HD. No CD bootup. I was hoping to load the win 98 boot disk and CD drives then access the CD to install Win 98. Its not a SCSI drive. I can't boot from the Startup disk as it locks up before the CD drivers are loaded. I will try a new start up disk in case and let you know.
Thanks

369646 2005-07-06 09:49:00 follow the instructions and links found Here (pressf1.pcworld.co.nz)
sbm will allow the cdrom to act as bootable device
its great for older machines that dont support booting from cdrom

369647 2005-07-07 07:42:00 Thanks for those links. I'll try tonight. A new boot disk didn't help and I notice with the CD drive unpluged, the computer boots ok with the startup disk. T also tried putting the cd on the other channel as a master but no luck.

369648 2005-07-08 01:13:00 Thanks for those links. I downloaded the files and couldn't believe how well they ran and solved the problem. Everythings installed now and I have access to the CD drive. One of the few times I haven't had to battle with software to get everything to work.
Cheers

369649 2005-07-08 02:55:00 I seem to remember that the official W98 boot disk will happily install a CD driver that won't work, and I had to experiment with the CONFIG.SYS file to choose one which would.

Glad to see that you got it fixed by not using the MS boot disk. ;)
