369533 2005-07-05 00:32:00 Is is a good idea when shutting down to do it step-by-step and wait for each function to close down, rather than for e.g., being on the net, clicking on shutdown and let the machine organise the disconnecting and closing the browser and then going into the shutdown routine?

I always do it step-by-step, thinking it is cleaner and less likely to cause conflicts but others scoff at this saying it's all coded in.

On this friends computer they have had troubles with startup saying "shutdown was not completed properly" and then it boots into the startup menu but since I've given it a clean out and run the maintenance, and shut down slowly since there have been no problems.

Am I right in this or is this another digital old wives' tale?

TIA..........m :nerd:

369534 2005-07-05 00:49:00 When using dialup I always disconnect before shutting down, and close any open applications, Leave those running in the background to themselves though. Metla (12)
369535 2005-07-05 00:50:00 i perfer to shut any programs that where not running at startup. exspecialy avoid shutting down if on dailup with an internal modem. some internal modems will cause the system to hang on shutdown and cause problems if you are still on the net when you shutdown. tweak'e (69)
369536 2005-07-05 01:03:00 Excellent. That's exactly what they were doing and the symptons they were getting. "Hanging" on shutdown and then fiailing to boot up properly next time.

Many Thanks to you both for the info and procedures...............m :)

369537 2005-07-05 02:39:00 The "coded in" procedures should work perfectly. Of course, that relies on the code being perfect itself. ;) We all know that all code is perfect, don't we? Graham L (2)
369538 2005-07-05 02:59:00 Sensible shutdown procedure?

:nerd:
I have heard that a new system device shutdown Hammer works wonders on those irritable hanging pc's.
There are multiple versions of this item, from short handled to long handle heavy little beasts, sold at any good hardware store, at a nominal price.

369539 2005-07-05 03:13:00 Yes beetle I haven't used Hammer but have sometimes resorted to Just-Yank-The-Damn-Plug-Out-The-Wall.exe.

And Graham L ,that's how I feel about it too. Why ask for trouble?

I've done coding myself and some of my it was not perfect! :D :D lol.........m
