| 369373 | 2005-07-04 12:29:00 | Recently my my Firefox bookmarks vanished & with help from here I learned how to find my profile & get them back from the innards. Now it's happened again. (The WHY is still a mystery: I've suspicions to analyse later) But it's not straighforward this time - and definitely beyond my expertise. Hours of delving into files you experts would've analysed in minutes show me the profile I'm tring to get back has javascript errors in several files & others say Windows cannot open them. Actually I did download the current update/patch for Java during the same comp session as the error occurred (Had read about a new threat & the icon reminded me to update) but I see from the file info the problem was an hour or so earlier - and I'm not sure if that's even the same Java? Still confused about which is which... The earliest modification I've found is in a profile's DataBase file, which is marked Opens with IE. As I use Firefox, I'm mystified - unless an earlier download (surely not ZoneAlarm?) used that & I didn't notice. It's key3 Properties - and might as well be Swahili to me. Others modified soon after have names like xptl.dat & XUL.mfl. Errors are Invalid character or Object expected, with codes of 8000A03FS & 800A138F. I've no idea where to start on this. Obviously there's no point in trying to move the profile when it's damaged & I can manage meanwhile with the default. So can I repair this javascript or do I have to uninstall stuff & get drastic (and remember I'm not a brave person if anyone starts talking Registry changes...) I have updated & run Spybot BTW - though not run antivirus yet. That's my next step. I have WinXP Home SP2 (still new on that) and am kicking myself that I've not learned to set a restore point yet. It's Firefox 1.04. So what else do you need to know? (Closes eyes & crosses fingers) |

| 369374 | 2005-07-04 22:31:00 | I can't help with your problem Laura but am just wondering whether you have any of Firefox's extensions installed. If so, I would suggest removing them as they could be the cause of your troubles. In fact, better still, I would suggest removing Firefox entirely and installing Opera instead since Firefox is giving you so much grief. ;) |

| 369375 | 2005-07-05 08:31:00 | Thanks for the suggestion Foxy. I have 5 extensions, it seems, and would happily remove them if I thought that would solve my profile problem. But I don't know enough about Java to understand whether the scripting errors would disappear permanently - or whether it's an intrinsic problem? These words at the bottom of some error dialogs are what makes me suspicious - Source: Microsoft JScript compilation error. Now maybe this is quite common & I'm being overcautious? But I don't want to maybe lose what DOES still work, and still have Java repair to do... So is this anything to do with the Java programme I just updated? I don't think so - but what do I know.. Advice, anyone?. Despite appearances, I'm not really having problems with Firefox as such. I've used it by now for as long as I "practised" on IE (still a newb) & my difficulties are usually due to my ignorance, not the O/S. FF seems to be working OK on all but the profile stuff like bookmarks/preferences. I'd like to try Opera some day - but not yet. (I might need my hand held over uninstalling individual extensions. Only done whole programs so far or just used Delete) P.S. I'm having 2nd thought about FF "still working OK on all but..". It does seem a bit jumpy with pages loading slower - or maybe I'm getting over-sensitive. |
