369343 2005-07-04 11:55:00 I want to power my Acer TM2318WLM Notebook PC off a 12 volt cig lighter power adapter,I have a 20 volt 120w notebook power adapter but the notebook end plug is the wrong size and the notebook mains power adapter charges at 19 volts,if I can buy the correct plug and splice it in will the 20 volts be ok instead of 19 volts.the proper Acer adapters are arms and legs to buy.
Cheers,
John.

369344 2005-07-04 12:31:00 My experience with a Toshiba laptop suggests it will probably be fine.

I needed 19 volts and the Toshiba was fine at 18 - 20 volt range. Below 17.5 it failed to work.

However I then solved it by using a cheap 12v to 230 v inverter and the standard laptop power pack, the 150 watt inverter cost $95 and is useable for much more than just a laptop.

A 150watt 12v - 230v inverter is half that price, and more versatile!
Lappy wont care if the 230volt sinewave isnt a sinewave.

John.Take lappy into tricky dicky, Jacar or any resonably well stocked component store and you *should* be able to find a plug to match. At worst youd find something on the end of a cheap power adapter brick that you can use. Sure its an expensive plug, but you get a free useless power brick with bare wire ends with it!

I prefer moulded plugs, as i'm lazy, and i find them more reliable than ones i solder up myself.
