369277 2005-07-04 09:18:00 Help please. I downloaded AVG and found a number of trojens on the computer and got rid of them. Then after reading a thread in this column I also downloaded Spybot. This found 187 problems and managed to fix most but said to restart the computer to fix the rest. This I did and all seemed to go okay, the balance were fixed so I clicked out f Spybot. Then all of a sudden I get these duplicated boxes with Spybot on top. In the box I get the following “encountered and terminated a process that is listed as part of a malicious software – Process ID: the number keeps on changing – Filename: MediaAcck.exe – Found In: C:\Program File\Media Access\ - Identified as: Wind Updates – then below a box with inform me again and kill process and a 3rd (not recommended) then at bottom a box ticked with delete the associated file and the OK button. Each time you click anything these boxes just duplicate. Closing the computer down does not work – when you start it up this problem also starts again. What does one do (I am a real novice) Bodes (8475)
369278 2005-07-04 09:30:00 boot into safe mode and rerun spybot. before you exit safemode take spybot out of startup either with spybot itself or msconfig (depending on OS). tweak'e (69)
369279 2005-07-04 09:38:00 Get this www.simplysup.com

Or go here

securityresponse.symantec.com

Trojan remover might remove it for you. There's a lot to remove, according to the Symantec site!

369280 2005-07-04 09:40:00 Tweak’e – thanks for the quick response. You may have missed my comment “novice”. Not sure what safe mode is (lets be honest I don’t understand what you are saying at all). I have Windows XP – I have managed to find the file that is causing the problem (under explorer) – but unable to delete it (seemed like the simplest solution at the time). What if I used the XP restore option to a date before I downloaded spybot? Bodes (8475)
369281 2005-07-04 09:43:00 AVG is an anti-virus program rather an anti-malware/ trojan program but they do overlap. Do as tweak'e suggests and then for a second opinion get AdAware from www.lavasoft.com and run that too. This is another anti-malware / spyware / adware / crudware program and it's a good idea to run them in tandem because one may well pick up what the other does not. (I do).

Sounds like this computer is putrescent. Run all your diagnostic / fixit programs in Safe Mode as suggested because some of your infestations will not be activated in this mode so they can be dealt with when they're not activated.

Get back here on what goes on and you'll get more help...............m

369282 2005-07-04 09:45:00 To get into safe mode press F8 (hold it down), when u reboot.

And select safe mode.

I dont think Spybot is the prob. You have adware.

It'll be better if u get trojan remover and remove it.

i think the problem may just be spybot is having a problem trying to remove a malware thats trying to stop itself being removed.

369284 2005-07-04 09:46:00 What tweak'e means is this... reboot the computer. When the computer starts its startup, press F8. You will come to a startup menu (with SafeMode, Safe Mode with command prompt etc etc)
Select Safe Mode and press Enter
Let it boot up, it will say something about System Restore, you don't want that (for now anyway)
You will notice the display is all funny, thats normal for safe mode.
Run Spybot.
Once its finished, reboot the computer but let it boot normally

Basically what they just said
