369803 2005-07-06 01:30:00 Hi

With wifi, I read that with win2k its a bit more messy to use than winXP. Something in regards to searching the the network and then assign a code or such for authentication. WinXP are also searched.

Can you tell me about this and if there are any software out there to overcome? I intend to get a wifi USB thumb to get it working. Mainly for travelling.

Thanks.

369804 2005-07-06 01:44:00 I've got a couple of DSE USB WiFi devices. I use them between W2k and W2k, and between W2k and W98.

Apart from having to reload the software occasionally (using the Control Panel Install/remove software repair option) I have no problems with the process.

369805 2005-07-06 03:14:00 Hello Graham

I meant, that I read win2k has less software support than winXP. With win2k it requires more work to locate and connect to a wifi hotspot.

Is this true? Is it pretty easy to connect to a wifi hotspot with win2k?
Also would u suggest USB or PC Card for wifi?

Thanks again

369806 2005-07-06 03:21:00 According to Intel, www.intel.com

You could use Boingo to find hotspots. For 2k.

369807 2005-07-06 03:30:00 A USB unit lets you put the antenna in the air a bit . A PC card is less to carry, but will cost more .

The monitor software provided with my DSE units showed active WiFi sites wehn I took a laptop into town . Ethereal is a very good (free) network analyser . . .

A WiFi is just another network interface . The setup (encryption, AdHoc/Infrastructure, identification . . . ) depends on the software provided with it . W2k is very good at networking .
