369510 2005-07-05 01:32:00 Hi

I have a P3 600 laptop with USB 1 ports. Is it possible to use a DVDr on it be it slowly?

Any good drives suggestion would be neat too.

Thanks

Edit, something cheap would be good, maybe a enclosure with a 5.25" DVD Drive. I plan to use it once off with laptop and pop it into my future PC. The drive is not going to be used on the go, its just once off time to backup some files.

If you're not going to get your new computer just yet, go to a cybercafe, ask for your computer to be connected to their network, then use their computers to burn a backup DVD.

369512 2005-07-05 02:16:00 Thanks,

To transfer 5GB onto a disk, this should not cost too much right?
Nomad (952)
369513 2005-07-05 02:33:00 Umm. Depends on the Ethernet speed. A 10MHz link might take some hours to transfer 5GB. 5 GB will make 1-and-a-bit DVDs ... have a talk to an Internet cafe about it. But it will still be cheaper than a drive.

Edit: I see you migt be using a USB1 link ... this would be a simlar speed to 10MHz Ethernet.

I have a 10/100 speed LAN card. USB 1.1 port.

369515 2005-07-05 04:59:00 100/10 lan speed is builtin. I did some organising and the total load is 3.3GB :) Nomad (952)
369516 2005-07-05 05:59:00 At 100 Mbps, that's probably about 7-10 minutes ... depending on the network load. A small computer shop might be able to do it for you, too (with a network which isn't loaded by lots of machines like a cafe). Graham L (2)
