369217 2005-07-04 06:52:00 I've been thinking about my computer after trying to play BF2 and I've come to the conclusion that the upgrade of a few things might be a clever Idea.

Ive come up with a list of what components I reckon are too slow and what I was thinking of replacing them with:

Harddrive: 80GB ATA133 - Upgrade to SATA & something bigger.
RAM: 512MB DDR333 - Upgrade to same size, faster speed (DDR400?) and probably 1gb later on (dual channel?)
CPU: Athlon XP 2600 - Upgrade to A64 3200/3400
Motherboard: MSI KT4V - Upgrade to MSI K8N Neo-FSR nVIDIA nForce3, Socket 754, FSB 800MHz, DDR 400, AGP 8X, SATA, ATA133, GLAN, 7.1 channel Sound (Model MS-7030)

I'll be keeping my GeForce 6600GT and my Thermaltake 420W Purepower should be able to handle all that??

Suggestions welcome...

369218 2005-07-04 07:22:00 If you are going to change the MB go with socket 939 instead. Yes the PSU is enough to run all that. pctek (84)
369219 2005-07-04 08:16:00 What advantage would Skt 939 have over 754? Agent_24 (57)
369220 2005-07-04 08:48:00 SATA hard drives are only slightly faster than IDE hard drives unless you go for the expensive 10000 RPM ones.

I'm not sure how much difference DDR400 will make over DDR333. I would be interested if anyone knows. Also, how much difference does the CAS rating make in terms of playing the games and in load times?

My computer is badly in need of an upgrade, but student life uses up all my money :(. Only half a year left until I finish my degree, and a major upgrade will come soon after.

369221 2005-07-04 08:53:00 I would upgrade the RAM to 1GB straight away. I'm trying to play at the moment with 512MB of DDR400 and I sometimes get random graphics lag which I think is due to my RAM but could also be my P4 2.4GHz processors fault. (I'm playing at 1024*768 on low settings with a 6600gt agp) ad_267 (6193)

Future proofing. The new dual core CPUs for instnace, while too expensive so far are able to be installed on nearly all 939 boards. No 754s.

Nforce 4 chipset too.

369223 2005-07-04 16:44:00 Just get the ram first, borrow another 512 mb from a friend and try it out.

1 gb is the sweet spot for the game. :)

It will make a huge difference on Battlefield 2 as it did for me when I got more to play the game.

No more graphics lag.And can run/drive/fly around fast.

All the other items leave untill you really, really need to upgrade.

Try this first to save your money for other things.
