369224 2005-07-04 06:15:00 i have looked every were for a decent partitioner and cannot find one can any one tell me of a free one that can keep my old files and make a new partition 10 gb big with only 30 used of my 80 gb hd? CorbinH (37)
369225 2005-07-04 06:32:00 er......no. not if you want a non-distructive windows partition program.

ranish (www.ranish.com) is very good. however its not designed for what you want. however if you move all the data on the disk to the front of the disk then you can saftly partition the free space behind the data.

the nearest thing to what you want is a linux partition prog (wheres chill hiding!)
or go buy partition magic or a similar program.

369226 2005-07-04 06:47:00 Try SystemRescue (http://www.sysresccd.org/). It is a live-CD which means you just boot the CD to run the programs without loading Windows. The QTParted on it is a Partition Magic clone and can non-destructively partition hard drives including those formatted with NTFS.

But please be aware, things can go wrong and you can lose all your data. Backup anything important first.

how do u move data to the front of the HD??? i think if i moved it to the front i should be safe since ive only used 30 gigs or so of a 80 gig hard drive and i just wanna make a 10GB partition for my sisters song (which drive me crazy) on the end of the HD.... also i might try the live cd approach

369228 2005-07-05 09:54:00 how do u move data to the front of the HD???
i've used defrag, tho it may depend on what defrag program you use as some don't give you any optoins to change files locations.

369229 2005-07-05 11:52:00 Thats what the Windows one does by default thou admittedly.

Its not perfect, and sometimes stuff is left hanging at the end of the drive :-/

Qtparted will tell you how small it can shrink safely thou

369230 2005-07-05 22:32:00 ok i ran the defragger windows supplied it has some "unmovable files" at the end??? is it possible to move them? and if i cant move them how do i find out what they are and i might just overwrite them CorbinH (37)

369232 2005-07-06 21:53:00 I would suggest disabling your swap file then defragging in safe mode. Windows may then be able to move the unmovable files. FoxyMX (5)
369233 2005-07-07 04:11:00 Run a Scandisk first as well, they may be corrupt files. Then degfrag as FoxyMX said - Best way of getting the ideal defrag :) Chilling_Silence (9)
