370125 2005-07-06 21:32:00 Hi,

wow - long time since I posted on this forum!!!! Its changed! For the better I might add - go vBulletin!

Anyway, running XP Pro on my desktop, and ME on my laptop with a x-over cable in between.

Just running a simple home network for transferring files using a workgroup and manually set IP addresses over TCP/IP.

Everything works fine until I enable Nortan AV (2003, but with all the current updates installed). Then when browsing network shares in explorer (moreover when copying files from the laptop to desktop), the explorer window appears to 'hang'. If given enough time (5-10 mins in some cases) the window becomes live again and the transfer begins and works at the expected speed.

With Autoprotect disabled, there is no hang and everything works as it should.

Have tried with XP firewall on and off.

Running Sygate 5.6 Personal Firewall, but makes no difference if this is on or off.

Starting to go bald.

Any help appreciated...

370126 2005-07-07 00:57:00 And how much ram is installed??

I doubt its autoprotect as I've got it enabled on these two atm. (Part of NIS 2003). It doesnt slow the network down tho.

It might even be the NIC drivers, see if there's an update for both PC's and update them. Or defragging both hdds might help.

370127 2005-07-07 01:31:00 RAM is not huge (256MB DDR), but the fact remains that with AV enabled it grinds to a halt and with it disabled (but still running, and thus still using RAM) it is fine. EG to transfer a 10MB file with autoprotect off it takes les than 5 seconds, with it on it takes 5-10 mins to start transferring, but it actually transfers in the same time (a few seconds).

Obviously AV is scanning the file before transfer or something, and taking it's time doing so.

I haven't tried updating the NIC drivers. I will give this a go next time I use that machine.

Anyone who has come accross this before have any other suggestions. Google finds a collection of others with the same problem, but no solutions.

Cheers

370128 2005-07-07 02:08:00 It won't be NIC drivers or the cards or that sort of thing . Your network works . You know that ;) The slowdown happens when NAV is running .

The problem is software . It's NAV .

I don't think it's scanning the file . That shouldn't take five minutes . I suspect that when you connect to the shared directory, it scans the whole damn directory . That might take a bit of time . I hope it's not scanning the whole disk on the other machine . :D

Try removing the "network shares" See what happens when you use the "Network Neighbourhood" . That might reduce the testing to only the files you actually access .

Otherwise, hunt through the options available in NAV . It must be able to know that a file hasn't been changed since it last checked it . (I may be doing NAV an injustice . . . perhaps it is only checking files which have been changed since it last saw them on the other machine . ;) Does NAV keep a log of what it's doing? Can it be made to make one?)

370129 2005-07-07 02:12:00 Autoprotect doesnt have to be enabled for the AV itself to work .

It scans in the background, when enabled . To let u know, if there's virus-like activity . And I would say this would use up memory doing this .

Thats what the scan with Norton AV option is for, for scanning files in My Computer in XP .

370130 2005-07-07 02:20:00 OK. ;)

I'd guess SG's network is up all the time, so autoprotect won't have much to do.

If E3O's peer-to-peer connection is occasional, each time the network shares add complete new "disks" to both machines, the scan will have a lot of work to do.

370131 2005-07-07 02:36:00 That could be it I guess Graham.

Gonzales - I understand the workings of Autoprotect, it background monitors/scans files to catch virii, but it also checks files as they are accessed and/or modified and/or moved as added security.

Looks like I may have to put up with it.

It is interesting to note that the 'hang time' is less for smaller files.

I don't think it is scanning the file, but it is doing something. I tried just sharing one folder with about 30MB of files in it (total number of files is 8) and made no difference, When just sharing a folder of similar size but about 100 files, it doesn't hang for nearly as long when transferring these files of smaller size per file.

Unfortunately Norton doesn't have an option to ignore autoprotect for networked shares or the like.

hanks for the help anyway, if I nut something out I'll let you know. maybe there is something I'm missing.

370133 2005-07-24 22:38:00 Thankyou JB, I found a similar function in my version of NAV. I will give this a go and see if it works. Sorry for the late reply, but I have been away for awhile and just got back. echothreezero (6612)
