2005-07-06 10:23:00 | If I were to replace Outlook Express and Internet Explorer with other programs, do I need to then somehow dissable IE ? I guess I need to keep OE active, but in the background, so I can still select any Microsoft updates I want to install. Any thoughts?

2005-07-06 10:37:00 | Curly.... Just out of curiosity, why would you want to? Other than trying something new? I have been on computer since before XP came out, w 98se, about a year to give XP time to settle down , then I changed up. All this time on a modem. I caught nothing "Harmful" in all that time. I did routine "Housekeeping" to the level of my small abilities, thats all. For the last 9months we have been on broadband, & have had just 3 baddies, caught & stopped by our protection. I see/hear/read a lot about OE & IE being SO bad, why does Bad not happen to me?? If you walk across a cow paddock you need to watch where you put your feet. Why is the Internet any different?? PJ

2005-07-06 10:50:00 | Firefox and thunderbird both avalible from here (http://www.mozilla.org/) others might have other suggestions, IE is built inti the heart of the os system so you can't get rid of it, every program use's an explorer window of some sort, outlookyou can just stop using it, i don't know about deleting it..... | plod (107) | |
2005-07-06 11:03:00 | pj. Amen to that. Good housekeeping. I too am a long time MS/IE/OE user and seem to keep a clean bill of health. I run several anti's on a regular basis. Probably too old to start learning something totally new just to avoid the housekeeping. | Scouse (83) | |
2005-07-06 11:29:00 | If I were to replace Outlook Express and Internet Explorer with other programs, do I need to then somehow dissable IE ? I guess I need to keep OE active, but in the background, so I can still select any Microsoft updates I want to install. Any thoughts? Why you would need to disable or uninstall Internet Explorer is beyond me but you can. Not all that easy but can be done. OE I take it is Outlook Express and why you need to run this in the background is also beyond me. "IE" for Internet Explorer is embedded rather thoroughly in WinXP and is part of the operating system hence it it not easy to get rid of. OE hopefully being Outlook Express is an Email Client and that is all. I use Outlook as my Email Client which comes with MS Office. You can use WinXP Home or Pro as an operating system which will have "IE" as a browser and "OE" as an Email client. These both come with the operating system and cost you no more money than you have already paid. Other people using Windows can use other browsers and other Email clients. I can and have used other browsers and other email clients here to test them out. You will not have to remove the default from Windows to use other browsers or email clients. You may wish to remove those purely to save hard drive space. I downloaded Incredimail a couple of days ago as I had not tried this for two or three years. After importing all my contacts and some 9,300 email messages my computer slowed rather badly. I then went to the Export on Incredimail and tried to get the messages out again. Can Export contacts but not the messages. Back to Outlook 2003 for me. Running Windows you can use several browsers and several email clients. As I see this you can use any browser os email client you want so lond as it runs under a version of Windows. If you are feeling a little more adventerous you can run a different O/S. I won't mention some of them as I may get a rap over the knuckles again.

2005-07-06 11:37:00 | OE can be uninstalled however IE while possible to get rid of some programs require it before they will be installed so i normally leave it installed. i use opera and eudora. both have more features, run better and has better sicurity than IE and OE.

2005-07-06 21:27:00 | I think I will give it a miss thanks. It won't get me over the computer slowing to a crawl. :-) | Elephant (599) | |
2005-07-07 00:40:00 | Thanks for the replies. I have used OE and IE for years and never had a problem, so the change is just to update to something more modern and perhaps more to the point, to slowly move away from Microsoft and the constant updates and security patches they put out. Its been sort of fun, but its time to move on.

2005-07-07 00:52:00 | The update may not be for OE or IE, it might be for XP . Or windows . So, really u dont have a choice if u use windows but to keep it up to date . If u dont want IE or OE, install linux, or some other OS . BTW, I see there's now a fix for this java prob, it just came out . Altho, it isnt needed if u install SP2 after u iunstall XP, as it doesnt install MS Java . Just use Sun's Java .
