| 370287 | 2005-07-10 20:52:00 | Hi Beetle I did a test for you out of curiosity. (I remembered the motel name from when you first got a website) Yes, it was good to find you easily in Google, but I've a few quibbles on your behalf - bearing in mind WHY you have a website. If it's just to provide info for people who already know your motel name, they'll find that. But if I ( who've only been to Wanganui once yonks ago ) am looking for a likely place to stay, you need to be in some of Google's front-page general region/accomodation lists. That's where I'd start, knowing nothing. Searching that way, I found you only twice - and I kept looking further than I probably would as a real prospective customer. The first I found (Yellow Pages) gave your phone & fax nos, but no symbol showing that you have a website.Too new, maybe? Needs to be fixed for the next phone book. The other on Page 1 (links from Destination Wanganui) was similar - no symbol, though several other motels have website links. There's lots of competition there... I couldn't find you in NZs River Regions or FourCorners, but looking good in Tourism.net.nz and HolidayGuide.co.nz - and of course your own website, though only 2 of the 5 links on your Homepage worked for me. Hope some thoughts from an "objective South Islander" may help? |

Perhaps you should get your money's worth and get them to explain the in's and out's to you. That is their job after all!! |

| 370289 | 2005-07-11 02:23:00 | This is exactly my point, i have no idea at all about web pages, how to design, look after or even access data . I have no idea what i should be asking for, expecting or even able to argue for . I no zilch about it . This is way new territory for me . I feel powerless because i know nothing and are told nothing, nobody i trust who is close to me, can be here and help me sort out things, basically im lost and bewildered and are actually thinking of scrapping the whole web page idea, because i feel i have wasted mine and others time . I dont think i have got any further ahead, no further in being clued up about what i should ask for, how to get it, what to look for and what the market can give me . One of those moments when i feel i wasted my $500 and 1 yr of time doing nothing . These moments make me wonder about how much i dont know, and why the hell do i have a computer . . . . . . . ive learnt nothing to be of help to me . Thanxs for the input, and ill keep it in mind . Time for more coffee and painkillers . . . . . beetle :dogeye: |

| 370290 | 2005-07-11 02:35:00 | Personally I think the idea of a website is a good one, when I look for accomadation I only ever book into places that have a site and let me see the rooms, location and general look of the place. The only issue I see is the lack of Google results from general searches, If you type "computer repair wanganui" you get my site on top of the list, You would want the same sort of results from your site if someone typed in "accommodation wanganui"...although looking at the results, those found are all directories, I would list your site with all of them. The link from the yellow pages will cost a bit, I can't remember how much but I do know that when Telescum contacted me with a price I told them to drop dead....that is I declined the offer, I didn't actually tell the rep to die.....muhahahahahaha. Your site is fine,or at least will be when brought up-to-date and finished, The issue as far as i can see is to generate traffic, otherwise the site is wasted. I have my site catologed by numerous free NZ directories, and google adds couldn't hurt either, very cost effictive. |

| 370291 | 2005-07-11 02:45:00 | beet, don't be down... just because you don't know the nuts and bolts of web design, doesn't mean you shouldn't have a computer. There are plenty of people who don't know, and/or don't want to know!! ;) Depending on your designer, they should be quite happy to explain how it works, especially the items you pay them for (i.e. hosting, design, domain name). Though Rob99 explained it nice and simply above! You just need to worry about how you want your website to look - look at other acc. websites and write down the URL's of those you like. In terms of getting the best bang for your buck, are you an AA registered motel? I know I personally always use their site to browse accommodation websites. Good luck :) |

| 370294 | 2005-07-15 04:35:00 | Well had a meeting with the web designer, - new one as the other guy we had been dealing with has gone, left , not to be seen again . . . . The new man didnt know the site well, had not done his homework, didnt know who and where we are . . . . we are local in a very central spot, you cannot miss us anymore . He did not seem to know what facilities we had, they are on the web page . . . . . . . so that tells us what? He went over what we want, start fresh, build on the basic's and once we know what we want he will start altering or fixing the page? He thinks we need to have less linkable pages, but have a visitors page? He wants a blurb on our front page . . . . . . . does it not have one im thinking? Things he suggeted - specials page (prices etc), blurb page, contact form, rotating pereferal ???? which is what i forget, list of features, and a rooms page, referals page, location and what keywords to get into google . I felt some of his ideas ok, but we had been through this exact thing a year ago and it didnt get completed . . . . . I asked if once its setup again is it possible for me to take control of it and change it when i want? photos, specials etc . . . he was shocked . and explained it would be difficult, asi need a program and html knowledge . Is this true? He said when we decide what else we want and i get it all together contact him and he will have a look and we will plan it and later put it together . but he is on holiday out of the country for 2 weeks, so when he gets back . Am i being over zealous and expecting too much or is this not good professional work? Am really expecting too much, i showed him a brochure, (paper advertising) but didnt end up showing him a disk of photos i had . . . . . . i didnt feel confident enough to give it to him and get something done about my web page . Should i give him the benefit of the doubt? Will i get charged for this meeting? what is the protocol for work, charges? :waughh: I feel no more confident now than i did before . . . . . . . am i really to picky? beetle |

How long was the first meeting, it dosent sound like it went into much detail I wouldnt pay for the initial meeting . With a web designer you will have to normally provide all the content, normally they will go through this with you, and give you a timeline to get the content to them . Unless you want to pay a lot more and have them bring in a writer to interview you and compile the content . |
