369927 2005-07-07 04:10:00 Media Center? One Xbox and one evening to flash the BIOS and change the Dash :)

I use the Xbox to stream files from my Pc for the family to the TV in the lounge.

Ive got a P2 400Mhz w/128MB Ram. It does http/ftp/ssh/vnc and was doing jabber for a while. Serves files via smb, backups of my music, but mostly ftp/http/ssh server.

369928 2005-07-07 04:17:00 I have an Exchange server to handle all my email, a fileserver...for file serving obviously, another exchange front end server so I can use Outlook Web Access, a backup server to back everything up and a server running ISA Proxy that is only doing web caching to speed up my browsing. All running over a wireless LAN so that I have the luxury of watching my "That 70's show" episodes in the comfort of my own bed.

Nice :-)

369929 2005-07-07 05:11:00 Same as Chill, PC with 120GB & 160GB HDD's with all my movies / music / tv programs on them.
Then use networked Xbox with Xbox Media Center to watch / listen to in the living room or bed room on a TV / stereo.

Will be building a server with SBS2003 to run as email / file server when my wife starts up her home business.
When we built our house I put at least 2 network sockets in every room so networking is not a problem!

369931 2005-07-07 10:41:00 I just have a Debian GNU/Linux box on a Athlon 1200, but with a 250 GB drive (and a 20 GB drive).

I use it for some web serving (PHP/Postgres), with Samba for backing up media files (and just as a partial backup of the Windows PC).

If someone does put worms/virii on the Samba shares good luck to them.

Of course make sure you are behind a firewall.

Lower spec'd PCs might be useful as firewall/traffic shaping/simple web serving.

Make sure you grab some 10/100 (maybe gigabit) cards that don't use too much CPU when moving large data. Although I just use el cheapo Realtek and that can cope with DVD across a network just fine, but with a good 10/100 switch (not a hub).

So what is the use of having an exchange server? I mean is that if your got yoru own domain name email or something? Am i correct in thinking that's what its for email@yourdomain.co.nz rather then and isp email.

And is the ISA Proxy like the Internet Cache stored on a single computer, but that cache can be shared on other computers on the network? Just a question whats the lowest spec computer i could run movies/dvds on a computer?

369934 2005-07-07 19:49:00 Also another question, the best way to store files on the file server? i'm not sure i could have one, my main computer i use is such a mess  i have files everywhere, not sorted, pictures, word docs, excel, music, movies, ebooks, programmes, drivers etc.. in some places in one big mess. Any suggestions? or maybe theres a programme out that sorts things? helps you keep track of files? Sleepy (7202)

Yup, I have a domain name registered through DynDNS which is free . They also host my MX record so that any email sent to my domain gets forwarded to my exchange server . So I pretty much bypass my isp (xtra) for any email except that it uses their network to get delivered .

ISA is mainly designed to be a firewall and is quite complex to set up . However its also an internet caching program . All computers have their proxy settings pointing to the ISA server for internet access . That way if Ive already browsed the page before or downloaded the program, its already there .

Im not sure about the lowest spec computer you could run movies on . My file server is a P3 800 with 512 megs of RAM and no video card and it can run movies quite happily .

My fileserver is organised by type . I have a folder for all my programs Ive ever downloaded . Another one for music, movies, study etc . It took quite a while to organise but was worth it as I have a pretty good idea where everything is now . Whenever you log on to my domain I have a script that runs to map network drives to the most commonly used folders so everything is easy to find . It works really well .

Hope this helps .

369936 2005-07-07 21:42:00 What are the advantages of running a domain? I tried it when someone gave me 2k server, but logging on to the domain was so slow I went back to my old setup. Do you need a high spec computer for a domain server? I was using an Athlon XP 2000+ with 256mb of RAM. Greven (91)
