370266 2005-07-07 09:51:00 I have one for work, its no different than when i posted it last time.

But they have sent a bill, and i was not happy with their lack of contact in the year we have had it......
what is the usuall protocol?

do they check it or alter, fiddle, update often?
Should they let us know? should they ask for updating or not?

i wasnt going to go back, but ...... yep.

May be on lookout for new web page, i have a domain name apparently....that goes with us, just not the site? web page etc?

i got lost and stressed on this deal last time, am totally un impressed i have to do this again.

If you paid for a years hosting upfront as opposed to monthly then yes it's bill time. Bad practice on their part, should have made contact every now and again to make sure you are happy, it's called good customer relations.
On the other hand you could have contacted them
Depends what the deal was I suppose, If you went bargain basement for the site the don't expect too much, however if it's a reputable company and you pay good money then they need a slap

do they check it or alter, fiddle, update often?

Not unless you have asked them to

They should definitely ask before updating anything on your site

You can have the site & domain name transferred anywhere you like, you may or may not be charged for this. If your year is up you will be up for another years domain name registration as well as site hosting

Maybe you should be a bit more proactive, it's your site and you should be the one making decisions on what & when it's updated.
If it stresses you too much, PM me and I will sort it out for free for you

Can you access the statistics for your site? Number of hits, where visitors come from etc?

Most search engines use content or text to get you further up the rankings in a search. MetaTags and Keywords help as well.

If I was to type into Google the likes of "Wanganui accommodation Motel" I get 42,000 pages presented and your particular Motel is not in the first Ten listed. It may be listed in one or more portals as a link from Tourism Wanganui but I did not check this.
If I knew the name of the Motel as I do and type in R*******y Motel Wanganui then I get 817 hits but your web page is not in the first Ten once more. The first one is a link from a tourism site once more. Most visitors are not going to know the name of your Motel and your web site does not stand out.

The web site builders should check it and also contact you from time to time. You should also be able to view the likes of cPanel to check how things are going.

Content should change on a regular basis. A static web site may get visitors but they will not return unless the content changes.

You paid for a domain name and you can have this hosted elsewhere if you want. You will need a UADI to have it hosted elsewhere.

For the few sites I have built for people I give them the password to access all statistics. I keep an eye on what is happening as well and if hits start dropping I contact the people and tell them.

Bear in mind that the site design and maintenance is an ongoing job.

Bear in mind also that the site designer can't come up with things out of thin air. They need input from you! You are the one that needs to get the Webmaster off their rear end and alter the site on a fairly regular basis.

Bear in mind that when people do a search they are probably just checking where to stay and they don't know the name of your Motel.

370269 2005-07-07 10:39:00 I wish you could explain things so people could understand what you are saying, your post is so confusing.
"I have one for work, its no different than when i posted it last time"
You are talking about a web site here I presume.

"i have a domain name apparently....that goes with us, just not the site? web page etc?"
Now you say you don't have a website.

You can have a domain name without a website, but for a website you also need a domain.

370270 2005-07-07 11:05:00 Web page with domain name, hosted by someone else.

No statistics, no help, no idea what key words are.

I need to update it photo wose, and get it working better, dont think ive had any contact through it. so to me its useless not doing what i wanted.

370271 2005-07-07 13:57:00 The parts to a website:
The webpages: with all the pictures are just files, these are stored on the webhost.
The webhost: a harddisk connected to the internet
The domain name: is the pointer to your space on the webhost, this can be setup with your webhost or with another company.

If you are unhappy with the service you are receiveing, just change to somewhere else.

First ask for a FTP login, then login and download your website files to your computer.
Then request a UDAI.
With that you can shift your website where you like, shop around to get the price you like as well.

How about a link to your current site.

370272 2005-07-07 14:13:00 What is a UDAI please? Vince (406)
370273 2005-07-07 14:48:00 What is a UDAI please?

Unique Domain Authentication ID (UDAI) (www.dnc.org.nz)
The Unique Domain Authentication ID, or UDAI, is a randomly generated unique identifier that is required to authenticate requests to transfer domain names from one registrar to another...
so yeah, who made it, whats the address etc etc

370274 2005-07-08 04:21:00 We currently have a new yr paid for, thanxs to Hubby . . . . . !
But we are thinking of changing it, or learning how to alter it ourselves .

The company has moved, we recently found out .
They didnt notify customers/ us . They have not checked with us to change anything, we badly need new photos changed .

Date on its says June 2004???

i just feel the need to change .

What can i walk away with if i want to refund my money and move elsewhere with it? just the domain name ? or the web page designed this way?

I dont know whether we should stay or go somewhere else for work .
Out of the frying into fire sort of thing?
