370849 2005-07-09 22:11:00 Being reasonably new to the world of computing (about 4 years max) I was wondering why you get the message 'it is now safe to turn off your computer' on some computers, but not on others.
Is it a fault, or a hardware dependent O/S message?

Reason: I just built a 400 MHz Celeron based computer with 256 MB RAM running XP (on a non descript mobo). [actually runs ok :) lol]
On shut down it brings up the above message, something I have seen on older O/Ss but not XP
Any comments welcome

p.s. thinking my next machine will be Pentium based Linux (I have heap of AT era parts, just not sure if I have working CPU or mobo, testing this coming week)

370850 2005-07-09 22:18:00 Usually indicates that the ACPI is not compatable with a self initiated shutdown.

A BIOS compatability issue or a BIOS setting issue, of no real consequence as its correctly completed the process, just not killed itself afterwards.

370851 2005-07-09 22:18:00 The system you're using, isnt ATX based . This is one reason .

Or there is no power management option in the BIOS .

If u use XP, (if power management is enabled in the BIOS, if its there) .

Go to control panel / power options and tick APM . This should tell the system to switch off / shut down, so that message doesnt appear .

I tried this on 2k, where the system said this message . It shutdown after I selected/ticked APM in power options .

370852 2005-07-09 22:58:00 Its probably the BIOS then, while I was building the thing from the parts I had lying round, I cleared the CMOS with the jumper, and on startup only configured enough to get it to boot. May even install Everest then find a mobo update
Will restart it after its finished its update install and reconfigure.
Thanks :)

370853 2005-07-09 23:01:00 Don't forget to install the videocard drivers then, if you're making up a system .

From the manufacturer's site, NOT from Windowsupdate . If there's a videocard driver here .

370854 2005-07-09 23:03:00 Graphics is integrated on the board, another reason to install Everest. Myth (110)
370855 2005-07-10 00:25:00 On my older computers, just for a bit of fun, I changed the shut down screens to read Just when you thought it was safe to turn off your computer.

It was interesting to see people do a double take when switching off :)
