370649 2005-07-09 04:55:00 I am still getting updates for Win98 - on 12 Jan I downloaded KB890175, on 10 Feb I downloaded KB891781 (for Win98) and KB867282 for IE6 SP1, and then on 17 June I downloaded KB896358, KB888113, KB891711 (all Security Updates for Win98) and also KB883939 for IE6 SP1. So if they have stopped supporting Win98 it is since 17 June.

370650 2005-07-09 05:04:00 I did realise that W98 had fallen (or was perhaps about to fall) off the support stage from Microsoft.
That sure was the case, but then a while after they retracted that, and decided to continue support.

This was a while ago now though, and they may have reverted to their original stance.

370651 2005-07-09 10:02:00 Last thing I heard ( about 6 months ago) is that M$ decided to maintain support for 98 because so many people in India still use it, as do I.

When I first started on the net I was concientious about updates then just got kinda bored with it and on dial-up it was so slow I gave up and don't have any problems, though I do clean out temp fiiles, history and cookies regularly, and run Spybot and AdAware and AVG.

If she can run Norton's she can use Firefox, it's easy and simple and has a quick clean-up operation, save her a lot of hassles as recommended above.

370652 2005-07-09 17:16:00 I know I am redundant here (as usual for me..S.O.P.) but I don't use the onbaord cleaners and such from Windows, no matter what version I use. I find them clumsy and a little too aggressive. I like to be able to keep passwords and other form-completion data and not have to re-write them in all the time...so..I just use C(rap)Cleaner. (http://www.ccleaner.com/) (pardon the Teutonics there please).

Once set, you can consistantly clean out all the crumbs and pieces of junk that gets left over from downloads, broken url's, missing redirects, etc. Then there's the other two sides to CCleaner too that remove just the stuff you want to remove. It is all very tweak-able for anyone, and can make surgical removals of things that you are now chasing all over the place, opening this card and closing that one and going here and there to get the same results...or not! One can even set CCleaner to run at start-up, so there's no need for user input at all!

Just check the site out and see if it suits you and the other young lady.
