370639 2005-07-09 02:54:00 I have a friend running W98 - she is unable to d/l and install the latest upgrades from Microsoft. Has anyone else struck this problem - if so, have they solved it? She is concerned that she may be vulnerable to any new threats - she runs Norton, which she keeps up to date.

TIA

I downloaded and installed four updates for Windows 98 and IE6 SP1 from the Windows site on 17 June with no problems. What is the error message she is getting? Is she using IE to download the updates?

370642 2005-07-09 03:13:00 Well instead why not change to using a non-MS browser and email program. Install a firewall. Install several of the better anti-spyware programs (ADAware, SPybot, Counterspy etc) clean out the junk every now and then, temp folders etc.
You'll find that works wonders - much better than relying on MS to patch the holes.

370643 2005-07-09 03:18:00 I suspect that Microsoft won't be giving a high (or any) priority to fixing whatever security faults there still are in W98. :D Graham L (2)
370644 2005-07-09 03:18:00 Did I miss something here?

Was there a shift in the time-space continuem?

Unless I was actually on that flying saucer and it wasn't a dream, I thought M$ had sent notice that they are not supporting 98, 95, ME or any of the older stuff any more...right?

Beat me with a stick if I'm wrong here (again)

370645 2005-07-09 03:27:00 Compared to XP, there are very few updates needed for 98 - main one is to the browser, ie changing to IE6.0. Personally, I'm staying with 5.5, with normal AVG anti-virus, popup stopper and Browser Hi Jack blaster running. Never had any problems over many years - and I have been to a few unmentional on this forum, sites. Ast***** etc

370646 2005-07-09 03:29:00 Thanks for all the responses - I did realise that W98 had fallen (or was perhaps about to fall) off the support stage from Microsoft. I am afraid that the idea of using a non M/S product might be a bit intimidating. She is not very computer literate - but considering that she is a relatively inexperienced user does very well - however, the programmes she is familiar with are the ones she would want to continue to use. Dare I say this lady is of "advanced years".

She does have Adaware and runs that and, as I said, also Norton which she updates regularly. She may be inexperienced but she is VERY organised.

My suggestion is that if this cannot be solved, then just continue as she is - at present use the "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" maxim.....

370647 2005-07-09 03:40:00 You could see if she likes Firefox. That's free, and being upgraded actively. Graham L (2)
370648 2005-07-09 04:36:00 afaik MS no longer support 98 but they still support IE6 and OE6 hence you still get the updates for those and the existing 98 updates are still advailable. tweak'e (69)
