371285 2005-07-11 09:14:00 I'm am the happy, or not so happy, owner of Jetstream broadband since April this year. Right from the start it's been nothing but problems. To put it simply: the connection drops every 15-30 minutes, more or less. Everytime, I have to reboot the modem (and sometimes the computer as well) I have made tens, of phonecalls to Jetstream about this, but so far have had no solution to the problem. I have been given every explanation under the sun, to why this is happening - everything from jetstream not being compatible with Windows XP, to faulty filters, modems, lines, computer and now finally I'm told it's because of power surges... I'm at the end of my wits and thoroughly fed up. I have had filters changed, a new modem, a Telecom technician out twice and a computer technician once. According to them there shouldn't be a problem. I have surge protector, and generally we don't seem to have many powersurges (lights flickering etc) We are rural, but not at the end of the line and, my sister-in-law whos lives only 4 km from us, has not had ANY problems with her broadband. What I'd like to know, is that could all my broadband problems stem from powersurges, and is that the likely option? And finally, what can I do to fix the problem?
I'd greatly appreciate any help.

371286 2005-07-11 09:23:00 Hi, and Welcome to PressF1 :)

You must be very frustrated by now. Seeing as your sister-in-law has Jestream, I would take your computer and modem over there and try it out on her setup. Firstly just put your computer on her modem and use her connection and see if your connection remains stable. If it doesn't, then something on your computer is causing the problem. If that worked, try switching your modem for your sister-in-laws and use her computer with your modem. Again see if the problem occurs. If it doesn't, then try both your modem and your computer together on her line. If your computer and your modem works fine on her line, then this makes it look like an issue with your ADSL line/connection. This may sound time consuming, but should sort out where the problem lays. :)

You do need to be within 5km of the exchange. How far are you exactly from the nearest?

In my experience Telecom is very good at telling you if you are too far from the exchange for jetstream to work
In other words they would not have enabled it if you were out of the coverage area
Despite all my pleadings :waughh:

371291 2005-07-12 06:05:00 To answer your primary question: No, power surges are unlikely to be the cause of your disconnects pjr .

I'd follow Jen's advice if I were you . Xtra Broadband is a very reliable service, once up and running it should not go down for external reasons apart from the (very) occasional Xtra outage or a fault in your local line or DSLAM .

I have been on Jetsream almost since its first days and have had only one Xtra outage and one DSLAM failure . I did have an overheating router for a while that required occasional rebooting but that was quickly put right by the supplier .

IMHO it is almost certainly your line quality, distance from the exchange, or some as-yet undiagnosed problem with your computer/installation .

Jen's suggestions will help isolate the problem, but I would start with your complete setup on your sister-in-law's line first of all because if that works, you have a clear indication that your line/distance is the issue .

If it doesn't work, you can then start the suggested swapping of components in order to isolate the fault .

Cheers

371292 2005-07-12 06:16:00 Down here in the deep south we aren't quite so lucky with the reliability. ADSL outages have evened out to be happening about once a month all this year. Most of those outages have just been bad luck rather than any neglegence on telecoms part - people seem to love cutting through fibre. Greven (91)
371293 2005-07-12 07:33:00 I'm on Jetstream but in the city. I can tell you that I have had the same problem recently. The connection used to stay open all the time, regardless of whether or not the browser is going and auto refreshing pages (or set to 'keep alive' connection). When Xtra had the big outage a month or so ago I started getting disconnects.

Fortunately I had to reinstall windows for other reasons and the connection is back to normal- on all the time 24/7. It might be a mission to do a clean re-install, but if all else fails you could try it.

But not if you are on the edge.
