2005-07-15 02:54:00 | Righty Ho we’re back on the case. Have now obtained Ver 4.69 and tried to install. Unfortunately got the following message. mine@ubuntu:~/Modem/intel-536EP-2.56.76.0-mdk10-UP $ make clean cd coredrv; make clean make[1]: Entering directory `/home/mine/Modem/intel-536EP-2.56.76.0-mdk10-UP/cor edrv' rm -f *.ko *.o *~ core make[1]: Leaving directory `/home/mine/Modem/intel-536EP-2.56.76.0-mdk10-UP/core drv' rm -f *.o *.ko mine@ubuntu:~/Modem/intel-536EP-2.56.76.0-mdk10-UP $ make 536 Module precompile check Current running kernel is: 2.6.8.1-3-386 /lib/modules... autoconf.h does not exist please install kernel source make: *** [check] Error 1 Pray tell what does all that mean?? :

2005-07-15 03:30:00 | The "make clean" is belt and braces, just making sure that there's nothing left around from previous attempts. That went through and made no complaints. The error messages from the "make 536" command indicate that you haven't got the kernel source installed. ;) ls /usr/src should give a directory including one ot two entries starting with "linux". (One might be just linux and it will be a symbolic link to the other which has all the version and patchlevel parts in it.) If not, you haven't got the kernel source installed. ;)

2005-07-16 03:21:00 | Get there, get there Foxy, I hope your right but geeeez I don’t even know where I’m going, so how will I know when I’m there? :( Anyway, I typed in what Graham suggested but all I got returned was rpm (coloured blue) whatever that means. (got the rev’s but no traction?) Don’t know what happened, but as I was trying to post this yesterday the PressF1 server crashed. Hope it wasn’t something I did. So what now guy’s and gal’s? Oh, got another little message that read “Script by Frank Muir and Dennis Norden” would that be a script error? :p

2005-07-16 03:49:00 | That seems to confirm the error message. ;) You haven't got the kernel source installed. do uname -a and write down the response for future reference. That shows what version of the kernel you have. "kernel-source ubuntu" to Google (www.google.co.nz) showed me that other people have had similar problems. But one of the abstracts just says something like "install the kernel-source package from the Unbuntu media". So if you've got installation CDs, you should have the source. It's just not on your hard disk.

2005-07-16 05:44:00 | Done that Graham . uname –a produces the following . Linux ubuntu 2 . 6 . 8 . 1 . -3-368 #1 Tue Oct 12 12:41:57 BST 2004 i586 GNU/Unux Yep, got the disk so I'll do a browse and see what I can find .

2005-07-17 00:23:00 | I concede, I retire a broken man . :( I also concede that my mates that bombarded me with Linux disks and went onto advise all who would listen that I had turned to “computer masochism” were indeed correct . However, that’s not quite the end of it because I removed the drive with Linux on (D: Slave) but now I can’t boot from my C: drive with windows on . All I get is Grub loading please wait Error 21 . So, Windows has Virus’s and Linux has Grub’s and the B… . . grub has eaten my Windows . Bring back DDT! Anyone out there into Clay Bird Shooting I’ve got a heap of targets for you, all with Linux on them! :p Anyhow, how do I get this B… . . grub to regurgitate my Windows? That’s the next step .

2005-07-17 03:51:00 | Why didn't someone give you a set of Mandrake CDs? It would have made that driver module for you with no arguments. And it uses LILO for its boot manager. lilo removes itself with lilo /u ;) Grub has a way, but I can't think of it offhand. ;) However, assuming you've got XP, booting from the installation CD should replace the MBR for you in repair mode.
