2005-07-11 21:52:00 | From the Intel site I downloaded INTEL-536-EP-4.60.1-MDK10.1-SMF.tgz.You mean the INTEL-536EP-4.69.1-MDK10.1-SMP.TGZ file? Have you had your coffee yet this morning and feeling relaxed? I ask this because that file you downloaded from Intel is for a Symmentrical Multi-Processing machine. You are not running a machine with dual CPU's or using Hyperthreading CPU's? There are so many files on the Intel site which is why I was concerned you might of grabbed the wrong one. :) I woke up in the middle of the night screaming, but with the thought that maybe, just maybe, the problem I have is because I have to download to a WinME computer and transfer the file via CD to the Ubuntu computer. That would make no difference, but considering the file off the DSE is 1.7 MB's I'm impressed you got it onto a floppy :p Do you have a USB flashdrive?

2005-07-11 22:59:00 | Well now, the plot thickens Jen. The Download is reported to be as follows: Name: XH1154-4.69-mdk10-up.tar.gz Size: 18.2KB (18,711bytes) Size on Disk 24KB (24,576 bytes) This is taken from the folder I downloaded to. I’ll double, double, double check and report back. ???????? Oh, no flash drive as of this morning but may be by this afternoon. :D (another little somthing for me to wreck) :)

2005-07-11 23:07:00 | this (forums.pcworld.co.nz) was my thread, i had the exact same modem, and also many problems , it might be of use... | Prescott (11) | |
2005-07-12 02:34:00 | Thanks for the link Prescott . Yee gods isn’t the path we followed strikingly similar? I note your problems were last Christmas and the new, you beaut, updated driver was the same one then . Depends how much emphasis you put on new I suppose . :( You don’t happen to still have the driver file do you? Just wondering how big it is? Unless I’m completely up the garden path DSE size it as 1 . 724kb (Kb not Mb) which explains how it fitted on a floppy disk . Anyway got a few other things to do so I’ll attack the beast again later .

2005-07-12 04:44:00 | Unless Im completely up the garden path DSE size it as 1.724kb (Kb not Mb)You are misreading the file size, it is a comma not a fullstop separating the 1 and 7. The file is 1,724 KB's (1.7 MB) in size. Files sizes are not reported to 3 decimal places. :) Now, just to make things more exciting  , I see there is a modified Debian driver provided by someone called Mike on that DSE driver download page (www.dse.co.nz). Ubuntu is debian based, Fedora is not. For your Ubuntu machine, you may wish to try the modified Debian drivers XH1154_Intel536-4.68-mike.tar.gz (441 KB) instead of the more generic driver XH1154_4.69-mdk10-up.tar.gz (1,724 KB). The modified debian driver had this in a readme.mike file: Changes Done to get it working on Debian/Knoppix File: Intel536_boot Changes: Added elseif checking for /etc/debian_version existance Lines: 179 to 202 Don't give up yet (and thanks Prescott for that link, I was trying to hide that thread from him to prevent premature depression :p)

2005-07-12 06:39:00 | This is Bob’s minder here . He’s really flipped out this time . He’s running around in ever decreasing circles screaming he’s just loaded a 1 . 7meg file onto a floppy disk twice and still has 1,419,766 bytes spare . What shall I do? After all, I understand you guy’s started this! I’d better go, he’s headed for the liquor cabinet!

2005-07-12 08:14:00 | Id better go, hes headed for the liquor cabinet!Well Mr Bob Minder, if you can drag Bob out from underneath the dining room table long enough for him to PM me I will email you the file and if you still manage to stuff 1.7 MB onto a floppy, then I want the brand name of that floppy - tis obvious a bargin when you are getting more that your 1.4 MB's worth! :D Seriously, I think something is rather weird is happening ... <hears the soft strings of the X Files music starting up> :xmouth:

2005-07-12 08:38:00 | Jen, he never got to the dining room table. He’s comatose at the bottom of the liquor cabinet surrounded by bottles. Does Linux do this to everyone? Fancy imagining you can fit two 1.7meg files on a floppy with 1,419,776 bytes to spare. It's not the two 1,7 megs he's already got on there that's wrecking his health it's what's left. (and the liquor of course) By morning he’ll be either hung over or rich. :D Cheers Bob’s minder
