371843 2005-07-13 12:32:00 I need to setup wireless roaming and not sure of the best way forward. I currently have one AP so have some experience with wireless. I will be requiring up to 3 or 4 AP or range extenders. This is where I am not clear with the setup. From my understanding I can have AP's plugged directly into the wired network at different places with the same SSID but different IP's ( and channels??) and users can roam. This is not realy what I want as ports are lacking in some places. The way I always thought it would be done is with one AP with extenders at key places. Not sure of the setup though.

Anyone had experience with this setup and recommend hardware??

371844 2005-07-13 14:16:00 Can you make a drawing of what you are thinking, would make it a bit easier.

Are all the access points going to be all on the same wired lan, or will they talk to each other to share resources over a few wired lans?

Are you trying to go a long distance with all the access points setting them up as repeaters?

371845 2005-07-13 21:29:00 I have set up wireless roaming for a few customers.
Most of them had a wired lan in one area of their building and wanted to extend the network to the rest of the building.
I used the Belkin range of APs which allow wireless bridging.
One AP connected to the wired lan and then 2 more APs around the building.
All APs use the same SSID, encryption settings and channel #.
Each AP has it's own unique IP address.
In the web admin page on each AP I had to put the MAC address of the closest AP so they each knew to accept communications from that AP.
For the AP in the middle I put both the other AP MAC addresses in.
Make sense??
Now the customer can walk around the building with a laptop and it automatically switches between APs without the customer doing or noticing anything.

If you have the APs all connected the wired lan I think they have to use a different channel #.

371846 2005-07-14 11:03:00 I have a wired Lan throughout with all desktops connected. We now have laptops with builtin wireless and want users to be able to use this instead of plugging into the network. Port outlets are used by the desktops so would prefer to use a repeater system. The laptop users will have the same access as a wired user - Server 2003 domain, file shares, printers etc. Security is an issue but all I can do is set the security options and monitor. Distance will be about a 100 -150m radius. berryb (99)
371847 2005-07-14 11:19:00 Are there any thick or metal walls? Rob99 (151)
371848 2005-07-14 11:43:00 This is for a school. Wooden buildings spread out over this area. No heavy wooden or metal walls with plenty of open space between buildings. I expect I will need 3 or 4 AP or repeaters. berryb (99)
371849 2005-07-14 14:24:00 I would go for Linksys WAP54g access points, setup as the default access point.
If they can plug directly into the wired lan setup should be easy.

You may get away with one of the above, you can mod the firmware to realy boost the output.
