I purchased a generic PS/2 to USB adapter so I could use my PS/2 keyboard on my sister's laptop. The adapter did not seem to be working so I tried it on my home WinXP computer.

It came up with detecting new hardware, then froze. I had to reset by pulling the plug (neither Ctrl Alt Del or power button would restart the PC).

When it booted back up, the desktop resolution had changed from 1280 x 1024 to 800 x 600, a message saying my hardware had changed and needed to reactivate windows appeared AND most importantly, the network connection icon in the tray keeps telling me my network cable is unplugged which it most certainly is not.

I tried changing cables, but no joy, tested cable on another PC and it is fine, reinstalled drivers for onboard lan, still no joy. Ethernet chip is detected and reports no problems/ conflicts, but does not register that a network cable is present.

In desperation I reformatted the PC (not a big deal as I was planning on doing it soon anyway) but the problem still persists. I'm going to put in my old pci network card in tonight to see if that works, but I am perplexed to see how an unpowered adapter could cause so much trouble????
(the USB port I inserted it into was adjacent to the ethernet port).

Crazy I tell you....

You wouldn't believe it.

Spent hours this morning trying to fix the problem, no success. Turned PC on when I got home, problem hadn't magically fixed itself :(

Unplugged everything, opened up the case and inserted old pci ethernet card, plugged everything back in and accidently plugged network cable into onboard LAN.

DAMN thing started working.......

I guess maybe all it needed was for the mains to be turned off for a few minutes......

It's always the simplest things that slips your mind.

Now to reinstall everything :(

Cheers
