371631 2005-07-20 02:35:00 We had this problem last week, trying to format an old harddrive I found at course. Didin't matter how we jumpered the setup (the technicians master primary used XP, master secondary used CD-R). Didn't matter how the slave harddrive was set up (jumpers, cable select etc, slave to CD-R, etc etc), the computer always booted to it.
I know it was an issue with techs comp, but don't know what it was.
I too would be interested in hearing what may have caused this...

Removing all jumpers doesn't always make a drive Master or Slave. :) Not all IDE cables are CS compatible. Not all drives comply with the ATA standards. ;) It's all rather complicated. I've started writing up what I can find out about IDE drive selection for my own interest. It might make an FAQ for here, if there's any interest.

371632 2005-07-20 11:30:00 Hi there!
It may be helpful to go to your HDD manufacturers sites and look up their manuals and FAQ. I had similar problems. Manual for Maxtor explained what kind of cable my drive required. It was 80 wire 40 pin, with blue, gray and black connectors, since my new drive was SATA (super). It may also depend on MOB whether its IDE socket will take SATA. Here I am not entirely sure.

Ive only met two types off HDDs, those that play the master/slave game well, and those that i end up swearing at :D

371635 2005-07-22 21:15:00 good news, i've managed to get xp loaded back and the comps running well. got hold of partition manager so will try installing linux to a new partition on my main drive. i will continue to try and install old drive to give me more file save space or to use as a back up disk. i'll let you know how i get on.
thanks for the advice

richI seriously recomend your buy a removable HDD caddy thing and then unplug and swap drives with ease. The type i mean sits at the front of your computer and allows you to change drives the same way you change CDs. You can then swap drives, install and run Linux on the second drive thus bypassing any likelyhood of mucking up anything. When you want to use XP, shutdown, pop Linux drive out, and pop the the XP drive back in the front. Zero chance of messing things up.

Alternatively, if you can get drive 2 to happily work as a slave drive, run a fat32 file system so both OSs can read it with ease, and store all your non dispoabe stuff on it.
