371591 2005-07-12 14:43:00 Can anyone out there tell me why enabling USB Host Controller slows my boot time on my BRAND NEW PC to about 2 mins. If I removed the USB Host Controllers, I get Boot Time of 25secs?????

371592 2005-07-12 20:23:00 does it matter if you have a usb device plugged into the pc or not ? is there a difference in boot times then ? drcspy (146)
371593 2005-07-12 20:45:00 Have you give your computer a thorough anti-spyware and antivirus scanning before installing SP2? Did you give your HDD a defragment lately? If you had created a system restore point before proceeding installing SP2, you might want to go back to that point and re-install SP2 under safe mode condition.

Cheers :)

371594 2005-07-13 01:02:00 To answer your questions,

Have not tried with devices attached yet, i would imagine it would be slower with devices attached right?

It's a clean install BRAND NEW PC (4 days old) all i did was put on WIN XP loaded M/B & VID Drivers and SP2, it doesn't have any other software on it yet . Well it's got partition Magic and that's about it but Partition magic won't have anything to do with the USB controllers .

Interestingly there were 2 USB Host controllers; 1 Enhanced PCI-USB (for USB2 . 0) I think and 1 other one just USB Host Controller . I have tried it with both enabled and then 1 at a time . Longest boot up time is with both enabled and then with the enhanced one enabled . eg BOTH-2min Enhanced only-1 . 5min and the last one 1 min .

Have tried MSCONFIG & BOOTVIS & DEFRAG

mind u i have usb ports everywhere 1 in the front; 4 on M/B and 2 more on a seperate PCI card, i wonder if that might be the problem . . . . . .

1 thing I have not yet tried -going online and chking the drivers for the USB to see if there are any new ones . By the way thks for answering my post!

371595 2005-07-13 01:09:00 If u made this system up, install the ide inf files as well .

And check if any entries in device manager have an ? beside them . . . .
If there are install the drivers for whatever device it is .

If nothing shows under USB controllers, delete this entry and reboot .

You shouldnt need a PCI USB card as that mobo will handle 10, so I would take it out and use the USB ports that come with the mobo

371597 2005-07-13 01:30:00 Maybe the PSU cant handle all the USB ports?

Since it seems to boot faster, when u disable the USB .

371598 2005-07-13 02:48:00 What made you decide to try disabling the USB ports if you dont mind my asking? Chilling_Silence (9)
371599 2005-07-13 09:58:00 Apologies, there is no additional PCI USB card there is just a huge cable that leads from the M/B to the back of the PC.

As for the PSU it's 350w so it should be ok.

I disabled the USB cause after reinstalling WINXP for the 6th time in 2 days ( seplt for 6 hrs in 2 days, even took my PC to work :p ) i got it to boot up in 40 secs. I then chked the device mgr and noticed that USB was not installed so i installed it and then the boot times went up to 2 mins. After that I disabled it again to try it and woohoo 25 secs boot time!
