371514 2005-07-12 05:26:00 In 3 days we will be upgrading to a 2M connection :D & a 10 GB Bandwidth cap! woot! bye bye 3 GB cap!!

I know with 256 / 128 K I should get about 35 kbps down & 20kbps / 25 kbps up

What type of speed should I get on a 2M connection?

I know I will get 20kbps / 25 kbps Up (Stupid telecom for removing 192K up  ) What will I get down?

371517 2005-07-12 06:21:00 Have you rebooted your ADSL router to see if the speed goes up?? paulw (1826)

We have not switched yet (it’s not for another 3 days).

I want to know what type of download speed I will be getting so I know when we do switch.

Plus we don’t have an ADSL router; we have an internal ADSL Modem.

I know it pays to read the fine print.
Just recently I went my ISP's home page and noticed I could upgrade to a 2 Mbit connection for free. My ISP is Orcon who I have to say I am very happy with.

At the moment I am on a 256/128 plan which is UNCAPPED for $49.95 GST included.
To get the "free" upgrade I had to sign up for a 10Gig capped plan at $59.95!

Blurb from Orcon Newsletter cut and pasted below.

----------------------------------------------------------
Free Speed Upgrade on BitStream

To thank our BitStream customers for coming on board and sticking with us we would like to offer all users on 256k plans the opportunity to upgrade to one of our 2M, 10GB plans with no upgrade fee for a limited time.

There would normally be a $10 speed upgrade fee, but all existing Orcon customers who upgrade their speed before the end of July will have this fee waived. Now you can experience the web at lightning fast speeds. If you thought that 256k was fast, wait till you get the full speed experience with speeds up to eight times faster than 256k BitStream.
Why wait?

Please note that my current plan is uncapped. This is because I don't want any nasty surprises at the end of the month. Go over the cap and you will be charged so much per Meg after 10 Gig.

Can anyone tell me what I have not comprehended about this?

Staying with my current plan for now. I very much doubt that I would use 10 Gigs in a month but sometimes Grandchildren visit and that may well make a difference.
Every now and again I will get a herd of photos from my Brother or Sister. Like me they have cameras that will generate 3-4 Megabytes per image. I know they can reduce image sizes and they know that as well.

371520 2005-07-13 05:22:00 So when we switch to 2m what will the download speed be? 50 - 60 kb/s? stu161204 (123)

They don't charge you if you go over - you get your speed reduced to pathetic instead.

371522 2005-07-13 06:30:00 And here's the site (radio.wise.net.nz) you can test your connection,Just remember when downloading there are so many varibles why you would get a crappy download speed. Perhaps other's might want to add to this bit? plod (107)
371523 2005-07-13 07:15:00 Ok, here goes 8kbps=1kb/s

So, currently you have

256kbps/128kbps, so you're expecting, in theory, 32kb/s download and 16kb/s upload

When you make the change to a '2M connection' you will get

2048kbps/128kbps, so you'll expect, 256kb/s download and 16kb/s upload .

I hope this is what you want to know .
