372177 2005-07-14 23:35:00 Hi
Bought a game (Locomotion) from a reputable dealer. Came with proper ring-bound manual and in proper packaging so I'm sure it's legit.
Trouble is that when I try to load it, it either times out while verifying the cd is legit, or it comes up with a message that the disk is a backup and that the original disk should be entered. The message refers to secuROM verification failing. I know there are 'ways' around this but I don't want to get into anything dodgy. I have e-mailed the game manufacturer's support desk but I'm not holding my breath for a response.

Any suggestions as to the best way to proceed? (I'm guessing that the vendor won't be interested as the packaging has been opened).

It's a Chris Sawyer game ('Transport Tycoon' under another name) marketed by Atari.

372180 2005-07-15 00:37:00 Oh well, no harm in trying that fix if u use XP. Speedy Gonzales (78)
372181 2005-07-15 02:07:00 Well, what O/S are you using? And what CD/DVD drive? Newer one? Old one? Some drives do have an issue with both safedisc and securom, the newer ones but.........I'd suspect its a professional copy. pctek (84)

The latest release of XP and the PC (a Dell) is only a month old so it will be a new DVD drive. Can't remember the type though ... I'm at work at the moment.

372183 2005-07-15 05:12:00 You could always try the combination of Alcohol 120% along with ClonyXXL

At _least_ download ClonyXXL!

ClonyXXL will tell you the copy protection on the disc. It _should_ correctly identify it as SecuROM. If it doesnt, suspect something dodge....

Speedy: I see little point in something that appears to be a Microsoft-product/Safe-disc specific fix on a SecuROM/Non-MS game?!

372184 2005-07-15 05:18:00 Well that depends on whether that fix, is just for MS games or a range of games doesn't it. Speedy Gonzales (78)
372185 2005-07-15 05:22:00 Let me quote Microsoft:

372186 2005-07-16 03:50:00 Don't bother with alcohol 120%. Not many drives can successfully copy securom, and the ones that can tend to be a bit more expensive than one of a similar quality that can't copy securom so I doubt Dell would include one that can copy securom.
I always rip the play disks for all my games (when I can get past the copy protection) to my hard drive - it is so much more convienent than using CDs.
