372126 2005-07-14 10:50:00 Hello :) , I am looking for some advice and help in buying a new computer.

At the moment the computer I am using is an: AMD Duron Processor 700MHz, 64MB total system memory, 20GB Hard Drive, 56K Modem with an 8MB nVidia Vanta AGP card.
Although I need to use it for video and audio, gaming, CAD, work for uni and the internet. The current set up means I am heavily relying on uni computers and missing a lot of the newer games :horrified .

Would the following setup be alright for around a restrained budget?

Motherboard: Asus A8N-SLI Deluxe, Socket 939, Athlon 64, NVidia

CPU: AMD Athlon 64 3200+, 2.0Ghz, Socket 939

Hard drive: Seagate Barracuda 7200.7, 200GB, 8MB, SATA

Memory: Kingmax 1GB, DDR-SDRAM, DIMM, DDR400

Video card: Leadtek GeForce PX6600, 256 DDR, GeForce 6600,PC

CD/DVD writer: Pioneer DVR-109,Dual Layer DVD Writer, DVD 16R/16W

PSU: Enermax EG425P-VE SFMA, Dual Fan, 420W ATX PSU

Case: Cooler Master Centurion, ATX Mid Tower, Silver

Monitor: Acer AC711, 17”, CRT, 1280x1024

OS: Microsoft Windows XP Home SP2, OEM

Office suite: Microsoft Office 2003, Student and Teacher Edition

Modem: Dynalink 1456VQE-C, 56K, External, Serial

Mouse: Microsoft Wheel Mouse Optical 1.1, PS/2 & USB

372127 2005-07-14 11:03:00 Thats a budget PC?

anyhow, its all good gear though the video card may be a bottleneck, its not a bad card by any stretch but it will be the item that will warrent upgrading to match the rest of the comp further down the line.I would look at a 6600GT.

The motherboard is a SLI model meaning it has 2 slots for video cards, a waste of money and motherboard space unless you intend to run 2 video cards....how many PCI slots are there?,most(all) SLI boards I have seen so far have only had the 2, which to me would restrict the options available futher down the line. The money saved by going to a board with one video card slot could go towards a better video card.

The "brand name" ram is of no real use unless your intendingh to OC,cheaper stuff wuill perform the same and still be covered by warrenty.

The basic MS mouse's are imo not great and only worth half the asking price, infact I have found much cheaper throwaway items to be better and last longer. The Platinum Explorer on the other hand is comfertable and very presice but expensive and a little light....but thats pretty much just my preference....

372128 2005-07-14 11:13:00 Thankyou Metla.
Most of the parts were refered to me as I am reasonably new when it comes to specifics on comperter parts. Can you recommend any substitutes that you would use when purchasing a system for similar use?

372129 2005-07-14 12:30:00 You want all that on a restrained budget?
How restrained is this budget (i.e. whats your limit?, Are you building the computer?)
Most of those parts you mentioned are quite respected (and some are quite expensive)
You need to tell us what kind of budget you are working to, so we can give you an idea of what you can get

372130 2005-07-14 21:56:00 Nice choices in hardware. Can't comment on the monitor, had no experience with them. I'd change the graphics card to a 6600GT though, not anything less. pctek (84)
372131 2005-07-14 22:30:00 hmm....The quick google I have juse done for the monitor bought up nothing but online sellers, though I did find a picture or 2.....and she aint no flatscreen (shes a fishbowl), Not really the way to go in this day and age.

372132 2005-07-16 06:39:00 Sorry about that i guess i needed to be more detailed.
my budget basically can run to a max of about 2500.
this is since it is coming out of the money earned during the holidays planting broms aka spikes.
looking for a good system, one that had the potential for upgrading but would need little of it in the next few years or it could be done simply. reliability, power, speed are always appreciated.

for the monitor i was thinking of a cheaper 17" crt or lcd but was unfamiliar with the different brands. same sort of scenario with the case, keyboard, mouse and speakers.
Do you have any recommendations of brands which i could research further?

Had a look at the different graphics cards and the GeForce 6600 GT looks like it would perform well for 3D redering and game graphics.
thanks for the good advice on that one.

372133 2005-07-16 07:16:00 I wouldn't bother with a 17" CRT. You can't give them awat yjese days. 19" CRTs are dirt cheap on Trademe. Or get a new LCD instead. PCWorld mag has just done a review of some LCDs. All your other bits look good. pctek (84)
372134 2005-07-16 07:56:00 1 . 6600gt

2 . 19'' crt or 17'' lcd (do a google on the monitors check everything out on an lcd in the shop to make sure there is no dead pixles, scratches ect,has a fast responise time important if gaming play a modern game on it to check for blurr, ghosting, check the warrenty etc etc . Research this out alot as its the monitor that you look at and if it does not please you then you wont be happy with the money you spent .

3 . cpu ask for the Venice core 3200+ 64 939

4 . keyboard and mouse can be cheap as $40 each, can easy replace when you have more money .

5 . Cheaper ram but get 1gb of any brand to save more money .

Check out www . pricespy . co . nz for prices of computer components to help with your budget . :2cents:

372135 2005-07-23 12:42:00 thankyou for the list and advice memphis . :)
went to check out quotes from both orange computers and tekzone limited in weekend .

orange representative gave a quote of about $2535 for:
AMD ATHLON 64 3500+ VENICE SKT939 I-INC C171 17" LCD MONITOR
ASUS A8N SLI DELUXE MOTHERBOARD XION BLACK ATX CASE
2x 512MB DDR400 PC3200 SDRAM LG 16X DL +/-DVD WRITER
ASUS EXTREME N6600GT 128MB XFREE XE222 2 . 1 SPEAKERS
SEAGATE 200GB 7200RPM SATA ENERMAX 485W ATX PSU
with 2 80mm fans, 1 120mm fan, XP, Office and PRAGMATIC 56K modem, mouse & keyboard

tekzone sale rep left me more confused though saying that with an intel processor and a x600xt 256mb radeon card & x800 radeon card the computer would run much cooler than the AMD quote and wouldn't need a psu higher than 300-350W, ie case one is ok . that AMD would be dangerous because of an increase chance of overheating followed soon after with melting into a pile of goo . funny i never found much mention of this in many reviews . :waughh:

i thought from more research of the components listed would give a better picture .

is there any advantages between the psu from acbel 450W and enermax 485W aside from a extra 35W? haven't found reviews mention overall technical benefits of one system over the other . orange rep mentioned exchanging one for the other for a lower price .
Cheers Kelstra :p
