| 372137 | 2005-07-23 21:44:00 | orange representative gave a quote of about $2535 for: AMD ATHLON 64 3500+ VENICE SKT939 I-INC C171 17" LCD MONITOR ASUS A8N SLI DELUXE MOTHERBOARD XION BLACK ATX CASE 2x 512MB DDR400 PC3200 SDRAM LG 16X DL +/-DVD WRITER ASUS EXTREME N6600GT 128MB XFREE XE222 2.1 SPEAKERS SEAGATE 200GB 7200RPM SATA ENERMAX 485W ATX PSU with 2 80mm fans, 1 120mm fan, XP, Office and PRAGMATIC 56K modem, mouse & keyboard is there any advantages between the psu from acbel 450W and enermax 485W aside from a extra 35W? Cheers Kelstra :p That MB is excellent - you don't need to use the SLI part. Get the Enermax - much better quality for sure!! I don't like the monitor. |

| 372138 | 2005-07-25 10:14:00 | Ok lets see: 1.Check out benchmarks on the video cards.(Google)(I would get a 6600gt minimum)(6600gt beats a x600xt) 2.The AMD 3500 Venice is a very good cpu, check out benchmarks (Google) 3.Get the Enermax psu (well known brand name good repretation)(Google) And that sales rep is: 1. Biased towards Intel. 2. Payed on commision to sell intel/mainly stocks Intel. 3. Does not know what he is talking about, does not keep up with changing technology. 4. Not interesed in what you the costumer wants but what he can make for himself. 5.That comment about the AMD cpu is so,so wrong and he is aiming that comment at people who are new to computers/or dont know much about computers. 6.Sounds very, very unprofessional.(personaly I would not buy from Tekzone if thats what they think.) PS I am not in the computer business,I am a gamer who likes to play games though. |

| 372139 | 2005-07-27 13:50:00 | thankyou for the advice . :) Indeed there is a significant price difference between the Gigabyte K8N F-9 NForce4 and the ASUS SLI motherboards, but when you need to upgrade graphics wouldn't it be easier to buy another card that runs alongside the pre-existing one instead of replacing it altogether? and dodesn't the SLI give the option of using two graphics cards . Does this create a noticable difference or are they both of rather the same quality? for a budget it all comes down to money, which according to the westpac bank can grow like trees, slowly . in the spare time this week between sleeping and uni went and found two more quotes and have two pending . mostly to compare the relative costs between different providers and intel vs amd systems . i think i will stick to something close to what orange quoted . i am still awake i think . good news though, my dad has offered to help pay for about half of the cost and no repayment plans with interest or anything . i was so shocked about it i had to ask him if he was sure and was he doing well :p looking at getting a final quote and ordering it with him this weekend if things go well with the other quotes . kelstra . |

| 372140 | 2005-07-27 13:59:00 | running two cards in tandem doesn't give a very big performance hit, certainly not enough to wrrent the expense of the second card, and the new generation of cards already whip the SLI setup. Plus games need a special profile to be resident in the video driver in order to make use of the extra capabilities. 2 cards does not equal twice the perfomance, you can expect anywhere from no benifit up to perhaps 30%. Which is why it is and probally will remain a niche for the extreme geek, You can easily get a card that perfoms far better then 30% faster then a 6600gt (though if you can afford to buy 2 high-end cards and run them in tandam you should be using the money to buy a house not computer hardware) And dont believe the benchmarks as to tandam cards, they worked on optimising the drivers for them first and foremost. |

The difference has a lot to do with the warranty and quality too . ASUS has a 3 year warranty . Gigabyte doesn't . There is the A8N-E . . . . Not SLI but has all the other whizzy bits . If you have to upgrade graphics, SLI won't help - you have to have the 2nd card exactly the same as the first . So then you have 2 rubbish cards . . . . Forget SLI, get a decent single card . Minimum 6600GT . Not the vanilla 6600 . |

That also goes for the majority of their other boards, although there are a few that have 2 Year warranties . Regards AC |

| 372145 | 2005-07-30 08:27:00 | Hi Kelstra Looks like you could be a bit out of my league - especially as you want gaming capability . The only two things which really struck me was that you are in Auckland and you went to Orange Computers . I went to them and they seemed to me good honest guys but I was conscious of what advice I had been given on PressF1 and that was that I should shop where they assemble the PC . At Orange the people who I spoke to said that they do not assemble their own PC's . Someone else, if I recall, challenged that on this forum . However both Mrs Misty and I were there and that is both our recollections and we discussed the point shortly after our visit . Although you want something faster etc than the one we bought, it may be worth a look as we received heaps of great advice from the good folks of PressF1 (certainly Metla and Allan C . etc) . Our cost was just marginally over $2,000 and that includes a CT-720D monitor at the last moment ! . pcworld . co . nz/showthread . php?t=54423" target="_blank">pressf1 . pcworld . co . nz I think it would be worth a look if you have not bought already . cheers Misty :D :2cents: |
