| 372032 | 2005-07-14 11:57:00 | I don't quite understand the permissions part Where do I type this command? "cat /dev/urandom > /dev/dsp"Chill is checking out whether as a common user you have the correct permissions on your sound. You need to enter that command in the konsole window, the same one that you used for the lsmod command. Try it as a user and again after su - to root. Don't forget CTRL-C will stop the noise if it works. :) |

| 372033 | 2005-07-14 13:23:00 | Bam_Bam: You shouldnt have to 'download' the emu10k1 driver. modprobe emu10k1 should suffice, unless you have one of the OEM Non-standard Dell SB!Live soundcards. Otherwise, modprobe should work ;-) |

Try changing what output XMMS uses. Try alsa, oss, arts, esd See if any of them work I notice I didn't have xmms installed, so I downloaded it. But am having trouble installing it... grrrr I downloaded the rpm file, and it says it is installed, but can not file the application. |

| 372037 | 2005-07-15 04:06:00 | MP3 is a patented compression method. Many distributions prefer to avoid the possibility of expensive legal problems by not including it in the free distributions. Mandriva seems to have Lame, which is an open form of MP3. ;) Try "mp3 mandriva" to Google (www.google.co.nz). The first link from that appears to be worth a look. | Graham L (2) | ||
