372022 2005-07-14 06:40:00 Hi fellow F1ers,

I took the plunge last week... it might have been a stupid decision, but I deleted Win XP Pro and installed Mandriva 2005 instead.

The problem I have is that there is no sound. My MP3s do not play in any audio program including Amaraok. There is no internet connection on this box yet...

Tried system sounds, but there is nothing... system properties tells me that a sound card is there, and even recognised the brand... I tried all the inputs and output (just in case I put the plug in the wrong one).

Am I supposed to install a driver or a codec? Its not only MP3s that have the problem but all sound files.

Im kinda stumped... and am not suprised, afterall I don't think Linux is that user friendly... but I want to persevere and learn Linux. Im sticking by it.

Any help would be appreciated.

372023 2005-07-14 06:48:00 Have you made sure that all the sound levels are up, and made sure that they are not muted in what ever mandriva uses for sound levels?

No I'm pretty sure you don't need to install any drivers or codecs for mandrake (aka mandriva) out of the box.

372024 2005-07-14 07:03:00 Checked everything I could find...

MP3s do not play... and I mean the timer does not start, but when I play an audio CD, the timer starts, but there is no sound...

372025 2005-07-14 07:17:00 Try this: Go ALT-F2 and enter in kmix, but before hitting enter click on the Options >> button underneath and put a tick under "Run as a different user". Make sure root is in the username field and then put root's password in. Now click on the "Run" button. Adjust the volumes and then File > Quit. Jen (38)
372026 2005-07-14 08:50:00 As far as MP3s are concerned, I know Fedora no longer supports MP3 but there is a codec available for download (well I know there is one for Xmms which is what I use)
I don't think many of the other distros support MP3 either (straight off the disc).
You will have to look for and download it.

372027 2005-07-14 09:04:00 Jen,

I entered kmix as root, all volumes at full, but there is still nothing.

Tried it with and without earphones... there is nothing.

By the way it is onboard sound (nvidia) and am running AMD with Gigabyte MB. Just thought this extra bit of information might help.

372028 2005-07-14 10:33:00 Okay, we have a few things to check:
Permissions - Try:
cat /dev/urandom > /dev/dsp
*Press Ctrl + C to stop the noise if it comes out*

Drivers loaded:
Press Alt + F2 and type:
konsole
Now, type:
su -
*enter root password*
lsmod

Try changing what output XMMS uses.
Try alsa, oss, arts, esd
See if any of them work

Post the results

372029 2005-07-14 11:09:00 Do you have a soundblaster live card? With Mandrake 9.2 I had to download emu10k1 driver file to get the card to work. There might be something more up to date out now. So give www.linuxquestions.org a try. Bam_Bam (7437)
372030 2005-07-14 11:33:00 ah Chill....

I don't quite understand the permissions part

Where do I type this command? "cat /dev/urandom > /dev/dsp"

When I went into konsole and typed "su -", then "lsmod" I got a list. I will post the results when I can do the above command.

Im using an onboard sound card "nvidia", and mandriva 2005 was not released too long ago... all the drivers should be upto date...
