373188 2005-07-18 10:33:00 I have Saturn here in Wellington and would like to hook my PC up so I can watch Sky. Is it legal to split the cable from the decoder which runs to the TV and watch what channel is selected for the TV on my PC? Is it legal to split the cable before the decoder and select Sky channels on my PC? If so, what software would I need? I am looking at purchasing a Leadtek TV2000XP which seems to get favourable reviews. Suggestions? Kawhia (8543)
373189 2005-07-18 10:37:00 Saturn is like Satellite TV isnt it?

If u mean what I think u mean, to get UHF Sky, then yes it is illegal.

Or if u mean get channels from whatever Saturn broadcasts, I cant see why not, as you're paying for it. The program that comes with the tuner or from the Leadtek site lets u view from external devices.

I believe its fine to do so _after_ the decoder, meaning whatever is seen on your PC would also be what is watched on the TV if tuned in to that channel.

That's my understanding of it too Chill. As long as it's after the signal is decoded, they don't care if you plug it into your toaster (Zzzzzt), if that's what spins your wheels.

Before the signal is decoded and "attempting to decode and split it yourself is an intirely different matter. There ahs been some debate on PF1 over the years as to exactly what, if any, laws this breaks. I'd assume it was at least a breach of contract and terms of use therein.

I too have Saturn, and have often eyed the black box up specualtively, purely out of technical curiosity you understand. But, if you really wnated to do it, it would probably not be too hard to source the decoding chips from Europe or the US, Tiawan, China, etc. Personally I would not do it on several levels.

I watched a Rugby World Cup match in a bar in Hawaii once. We put in our request the day before the game, when the time came (about 45min before kickoff), the guy behind the bar fiddled around with 1/2 a doz remotes, some of which controlled directional satellite dishes on the roof, others ones controlled cable decoders and TVs. After about 15mins we had a very acceptable feed of a live game in South Africa showing on a couple of good size sets. The next evening, we were back watching the AB's playing England, word had got around and the place was overflowing with cheering, boozing disciples and some bemused Septics (excuse slang Joe, if your out there). AFAIK, not a bit of the broadcast was on subscription.

Here "septic" is a below-ground tank into which excrement is held to bio-digest...same there?

373195 2005-07-19 01:49:00 Cheers for that information - might be better off getting another decoder and giving telstra-clear yet more of my hard-earned cash. Kawhia (8543)
