2005-07-18 07:08:00 | I'm new to ADSL so i was hoping someone could help me. I want to connect two computers up to ADSL, so do I need to buy a 4 port router, or can I use a HUB or something? As I already have a D-Link ADSL modem from telecon. Thank you for your help!

2005-07-18 07:23:00 | I use the Linksys EtherFast Cable/DSL Router. It has 4 ports for whatever computers you wanna use, and they are stackable too. You can add another and another Router to the previous and get quite a few puters online that way. Just gotta have the NIC in each tower to be able to talk to each other... As to hubs, I have a few usb hubs stacked too..but they are not going to do the job you need...you need a multi-ported router. ;)

2005-07-18 07:52:00 | No need to buy a 4 port router because, as you said, you already have the router. Buy a 5 or 8 port switch, both pretty cheap and not much price difference between the two. Then plug router and any PC's into this switch and you'll be set.

2005-07-18 22:38:00 | Does that cheap as DLink modem work as a router? I was under the impression that a modem only works if it is directly connected to the computer, that none of the computers will be able to use it if you just plug it into a switch. | Greven (91) | |
2005-07-19 08:09:00 | yeah, I was told that the cheap as D-Link modem wouldn't work if I plugged it into a switch, so we ended up buying another cheap as "SpeedCom+" ADSL Router, with 4 ports for $80. But I can't get the damned thing to work... I follow the intructions exactly... the intruction book is writen loosely in english, the same with the software installation program. There is one little snippet, a little picture showing the router connected to a HUB, but it doesnt explain this at all in the intructions... does anyone have and idea what i should do??? | bizzack (7739) | |
2005-07-19 21:49:00 | Try it this way 1st . . . . . take the router outta the system and try to get online thru just the ethernet (DSL) modem . . . and if that works then just insert the router in the circuit and try it again to see if the internet is still available to you . If so, then add the other 'puter . . . . but they both have a NIC . . right? The connex between the 'puters and the router have to be via CAT-5, unless you are using the USB ported type, but the flow of signal is the same, and from the LINE OUT on the router, go directly into the ethernet (DSL) modem with it's short CAT-5 cable; from there to your phone line . It takes a bit of wire/cable swapping to get this done, but right now you aren't going anywhere anyway . Take note of if/when the system breaks down and suspect that component . If all else fails, I know that you have the owners manual on how to reset the modem and the router . . right? Some units have a small hole that you can insert a wooden toothpick into, and that resets it . At least try to power them down and wait a few minutes and re-power them up again, only do it one at a time so you don't get shotgun results and don't know WHAT you did to make it right . Do this part with the 'puter running and it will establish parady with the units as they get discovered by the 'puter and the wizard will take care of things for you . I am assuming that you have at least ME or XP running here . I never tried DSL on less than that so I am not sure of the wizard for any other OPSYS .

2005-07-19 23:31:00 | Get a switch, plug everything into it, it will work. I use the same D-Link modem/router provided by xtra, I also use a Genius 8 port switch.
