1388071 2014-11-13 05:31:00 I recently got a Home/Office Brother HL-5470dw Monochrome Laser Printer.

When I go to print a document, the lights in my house/living room dim momentarily. My house is few years old so its got fairly new wiring in place.
I am thinking its because the brief power surge the printer needs to get drum warming etc is the reason.

Is this fairly common in Laser printers? If not then will this potentially damage my household wiring
I dont see circuit breakers tripping yet, but this behaviour certainly doesnt inspire confidence in using this printer

Thanks

1388072 2014-11-13 06:57:00 Errr no, it shouldn't be doing that. I have two lasers one Black the other colour (a Large laser as well), neither have any effect on power (as you described) wainuitech (129)
1388073 2014-11-13 20:38:00 You need to get an Electrician in ASAP .
You have dodgy wiring
That printer is rated at 716W when printing . About 3A , not alot really.

I assume your printer isnt connected to a UPS (dont plug laser printers into UPS's )

1388074 2014-11-13 21:57:00 That sounds bad. Tried a different power point?
Do the lights dim when you boil a jug or the fridge motor kicks in? Either uses more power than a printer should.

It should take significant power usage to drop the lights even briefly, if the printer is really using that much power I'd be worried.
I get the occasional flick of the lights at home that's so quick you wonder if you imagined it, but never do they dim when I'm using my laser printer or anything else in my house.

1388075 2014-11-16 20:49:00 If the dimming is very obvious, then it sounds like you have a wiring problem. Agent_24 (57)

Totally not normal at all.

Just check, plug something else into that same powerpoint (kettle, toaster...) and try it.
Lights dimming? Then it's the house.

NOt dimming? Get rid of that printer!

1388077 2014-11-24 05:25:00 Thanks everyone. I am getting rid of the printer. The dimming wasnt prolonged. Its more like a dim flicker that lasted at the most, less 0.2 sec I would say
I plugged printer into one wall power outlet that also has PC and monitor in it. When using printer it immediately tripped circuit fuse and turned off the lights.

When connect print to another outlet in the same room, circuit doesnt trip but lights in room and hallway do dim/flick for a few micro seconds.

Like one of you folks mentioned it can use 716W, I decided to return it and will get Brother HL-5470dw which the specs say takes 495W.
Hopefully this will work without causing these issues.

1388078 2014-11-24 20:11:00 I think you are fixing the symptoms, not fixing the cause .
716W is nothing, think 7 light bulbs .
It sounds like dodgy wiring , you should really get a sparky in . You may have too many devices on that one circuit if the printer is tripping the fuse .

1388080 2014-11-24 22:20:00 But is that 716 Watts peak or average power draw? Inrush current when starting the heater could be a lot higher. Agent_24 (57)
