1375364 2014-05-21 03:17:00 HI Guys
I was thinking its about time I got a GPS for my car.

I have a 3g normal phone

Someone told me that there are Apps for GPS on phones.

I would like to get a Samsung as I don't like Apple.

Do they exist ?

Do they work good

Can you hear them in the car OK ?

Has anyone got one ? (a Samsung with a GPS app)

1375365 2014-05-21 03:26:00 Both brands of phones come with built in GPS. Google maps also works on both brands of phones and has turn by turn navigation. You could probably get a navigation app if you wanted but that's kinda unnecessary.
Yes you can hear the instructions in the car. You just adjust the volume as required. It works the same way as using Speaker phone during a phone call.

In terms of how useful is turn by turn navigation when driving around the country, It is very handy if you are visiting somewhere off the beaten track for the first time. Of if you are going to pick up a trademe purchase from someone you have never met before and don't know where they live.. then it is useful to have.

Otherwise it's just a "nice to have" feature that you probably won't use a whole lot.

If you want a phone with good GPS capability you may want to aim for the higher end of the market.

1375366 2014-05-21 03:29:00 Yup the vodafone and TC smartphone here have GPS built in. But besides that both are pretty crappy. Not enough memory to update either of them. So, I'll be getting something with 4GB or more before I use a smartphone again!

The vodafone was pretty good with txting. You can speak the words instead of typing to reply to a txt !

1375367 2014-05-21 03:30:00 My Nokia Lumia comes with HERE Drive+ - as an app it's good, but it tends to suck through the battery, so get a good car charger. pcuser42 (130)

1375369 2014-05-21 03:43:00 I just use Google Maps navigation on my S4 (and previously, S3) both domestically and overseas, works great. For longer drives, you'd want a car charger though. inphinity (7274)

1375371 2014-05-21 05:30:00 The Nokia is designed to compete head-to-head with apple maps, and by the time they get it up to 750 Watts, it may just make it. ;) R2x1 (4628)
1375372 2014-05-21 05:39:00 I use my S3 with google maps all the time, works really well. A dedicated GPS is cheaper though. One gotcha is google maps requires cellphone coverage to plot a route, you can manually download an area apparently but it's never been an issue for me so I haven't tried that. Most of the time it's not an issue. Some people are concerned about the data usage but I find I never come close to using my 500mb most months no matter how much I use it.

What happens is, you start a trip - pick your destination and set off - all works briilliantly. The app caches a fair bit of data and you can drive in and out of coverage no drama at all - until.... you arrive at your destination, shut the app down and put the phone in your pocket. When you go to leave you discover there's no coverage and the phone hasn't retained the maps so it can no longer find a route. You end up setting off down the road looking for cellphone coverage.

1375373 2014-05-21 05:39:00 Why only Samsung? If you just need it for GPS there are better phones for not silly money out there. The Nexus 5 is $499 at Warehouse Stationary at the moment, or the Motorola G can be had for less. Alex B (15479)
