1375310 2014-05-20 08:40:00 John Banks has been charged with declaring donations from Kim Dotcom anonymous.
The donation totalling $50,000 was made in two cheques of $25,000.

My question is; how could the donations have been anonymous if the payment was by cheque signed by Mr Dotcom?
It could only be anonymous if paid in cash with no receipt issued.

Does it really make any difference?

1375311 2014-05-20 09:08:00 For accounting purposes, cheques/donations under 25k do not have to be declared - hence their anonymity :) Zippity (58)
1375312 2014-05-20 09:34:00 Come to this stage, can't the court just order the bank to retrieve the the 2 cheques and varify them? bk T (215)
1375313 2014-05-20 12:16:00 The court doesn't need the cheques - nobody denies the donations were made. The question is whether John Banks knew and therefore declared a false electoral donations return. His accountant says he didn't. But Dot Com (a convicted fraudster himself) says Banks did know. 1375314 2014-05-20 12:21:00 Its timely to consider David Cunliffe's conduct on political donations. He established a trust to hide donations - not to the Labour Party - but to himself so he could campaign for the Party Leadership. This was a secret structure purely to benefit David Cunliffe. Lawful but his conduct undermines criticism of anybody else.

Furthermore Cunliffe still will not reveal who two of his donors are.

I carry no flag for Cunliffe, or any other politician, but I fail to see how he can be criticised for actions that are lawful.

Contemporaneously he is being compared with John Banks, whose actions were not lawful and who has tried desperately to distance himself from the donations and the donor. With his appalling memory, he is totally unfit for any public service.

Banks is just one slip away from Wiliamson's sordid fate, and Collins is but one banana peel behind him.

How apt that the PM had to take time off from playing the joker PM to tell her to 'zip it sweetie!'

1375319 2014-05-21 11:11:00 I listened to a brilliant suggestion on talk back radio this afternoon. Rugby teams wear their sponsors names on their shirts. Why not have politicians wear their sponsors name on their shirts. This way the sponsors get advertising and the politicians get their sponsorship and everyone knows who is their sponsor. No need for politicians to declare who made donations to them. :D Bobh (5192)
