What a travesty it is that in this country we're ripped off by the used Japanese import industry yet there are hundreds of these car parks some with tens of thousands brand new cars sitting there slowly deteriorating, headed towards eventual oblivion.

Logic says why not sell these cars at a reasonable return, or even at cost price. But that's never going to happen especially in an industry renowned for its dog-in-the-manger attitude.

1375188 2014-05-19 00:14:00 Logic says , the reasons there would be a stockpile is because
1) there is an oversupply. People arnt buying, Car manufacturers can either shut down plants or stockpile production. Both are happenening
2) some particular cars are crap & the public just wont buy them .

Its not all as bad as it seems from a few cherry picked photos. When cars are made, they arent driven 1 by 1 to new buyers.
Nope , the production run is temporarily parked up & they are moved on mass at a later stage.

So they big questions were NEVER asked or answered in that conspiracy article
- whats the date of of each of those those photos?
- how old are those cars that are stockpiled
- what about the big sellers, Toyota Corollas etc. Are they being overproduced & stockpiled
- what are the true numbers, not some number plucked out of the air . What % are stockpiled. Are these just the car companies that are in the crapper ?
- what are the numbers of cars that ARNT stockpiled & sold/moved on quickly

Some car manufacturers are running huge losses, so logic says they are allready selling cars below cost .

But then they recoup some of those losses by gouging the after market consumer with grossly inflated parts prices.

Last week I had to replace the Camry's radiator reservoir bottle at a price of $155 plus GST. It's a 2.0L plastic bottle with some moulding so the shape fitted in with the available space, but probably cost no more to produce than the millions of empty milk containers in our landfills. Yes there is CIF cost ahead of Toyota NZ mark up, storage charges, dealer mark up, garage mark up. Whereas those go a long way to help justify some of the add on charges, it doesn't justify a cost to the consumer of $178 incl GST for a cheap plastic item probably costing less than $5 to produce.

:annoyed:

Super Cheap Auto are helping a little bit in this respect.
Its hard to justify the spare parts cost, when the same part, imported by other local companies is 1/2 the price or less.
Bearing prices are a good example of this.
I get rather annoyed when I see just how much auto mechanics charged me for a set of plugs that are dirt cheap from SuperCheap.

Ive never understood why people buy new cars, unless you have lots of money to burn.
They loose so much value within the 1st year . May as well drive along & throw hundred $ notes out the window.
