| 1375080 | 2014-05-16 05:56:00 | Canterbury Police - a credit to us all 15th May 2014 by Commissioner Mike Bush I visited Christchurch yesterday and took the opportunity to thank staff for the tremendous work they've been doing in very difficult circumstances. I was in the city with other members of the Justice Leadership Board to check out the early phases of the construction of the Christchurch Justice and Emergency Services Precinct. It's being built in the city centre and will host Police, Ambulance, Fire, Civil Defence and justice services on a single site. I was impressed by the size and complexity of this project, which is the first major Government building to get underway since the earthquakes. The precinct will provide state-of-the-art facilities and will enable collaboration across the justice sector. It's due to be fully operational by 2017, which is when Police staff are set to move in. While I was in Christchurch, I visited staff in Lyttleton, which was particularly badly hit by the February 2011 earthquake. I also paid a visit to the District Command Centre in Christchurch. Police in the Canterbury District have faced enormous challenges in the past few years as they have coped with the tragedy and destruction of the 2010 and 2011 earthquakes. Serious weather events in recent months, including repeat flooding across large areas, haven't made life any easier. Despite this adversity, our Canterbury colleagues continue to go about their work with a huge degree of professionalism, camaraderie, optimism and enthusiasm. Many of our people in the District have been personally affected by these events, and the way they have continued to perform their duties to the highest standards is truly inspirational. They are a credit to New Zealand Police and I know that when I wished them well yesterday, I was speaking for us all. Last post, I ran a Poll to see if I should continue with these Blogs. The result was 4 Nays and 5 Yays. Although the Yays won the day, I think that there was any real mandate to continue. The post was still pulling 300+ hits but with no feedback other than 9 votes and 5 or 6 comments, it's impossible to tell whether to continue or not. The latest blog from the commissioner follows the tenor of his earlier ones - there is little news of general interest, no conclusions or comment worth reading, and to reiterate my last comment, is little more than a diary. The commissioner's stance of treating the blogs as an internal talk up is his choice but it is at the expense of losing some of the support of the public. I've decided to pull out of this task, so this will be my last such post. If anyone wishes to take up where I've left off, be my guest. If anyone wishes to follow the blogs themselves, here is the link: Commissioner's Blog (www.police.govt.nz) Cheers :) |

Thanks for putting it up - - we need windmills dotted around the landscape to keep the tilt light flashing. | R2x1 (4628) | ||
