| 1374462 | 2014-05-08 13:42:00 | Hi there, I'm from Christchurch and I was looking for any LAN places or group of people that meet up to play PC games only to find that there are none. Apart from got-lan.co.nz which only hold sporadically events. I'm not sure if this subject have been brought up here before but I was wondering if anyone here know of any group or place that holds this kind of event in Christchurch? Or even in the whole NZ? I mean, are there any LAN places in Auckland? Anyway, it would be pretty cool to join some sort of community. Regards, PHCC. |

| 1374464 | 2014-05-08 22:04:00 | There are still events like AuckLAN that happen, but over the last few years the proliferation of better online experiences combined with chat capabilities being so much better, a lot of it is now online. A number of games don't even have LAN capability now, so :/ | inphinity (7274) | ||
| 1374465 | 2014-05-08 22:43:00 | I've noticed LAN support is not common on new games also, very disappointing. For example we used to play Flatout at LANs, then Flatout 2 - both a lot of fun in a group (imagine a drunken 3am race through the forest in school buses trying to destroy each other). Then Flatout ultimate carnage was released and turned out just to be Flatout 2 with updated graphics and all the LAN support removed. Online is cool but it can't match the fun of getting together with a group of people and gaming together, I don't like this trend. |

| 1374467 | 2014-05-09 00:13:00 | Yeah plus its a PITA to take your PC somewhere like that. With the advent of readily accessible high speed internet at home, there's less and less need to take your PC elsewhere, unless you're unable to afford a "premium" gaming experience, high end GPU, big monitor, nice chair etc... Then you'd use a Cyber cafe. | Chilling_Silence (9) | ||
| 1374468 | 2014-05-09 00:30:00 | Well for those of us who like going to LAN parties it's not about need or profit or convenience. It's about fun. It's also a social event with real life people in a face to face situation, which no amount of hi speed internet connectivity can replace. I still go most months, our club meets the last saturday of every month except December. It is declining in popularity though and game developers seem to have completely lost interest in it (no revenue stream I guess) so LAN gaming might well be a thing of the past soon if it isn't already. A shame I think. |

A shame I think. The times have been changed by the advent of social online gaming and the associated revenues generated by social gaming vs the multi multi million dollar cost and year long time frame to develop "hard core" PC Games for a declining market. Instead you now have socially networked mobile games like Angry Birds, Clash of Clans, Fruit Ninja and various RPG and FPS games that can be enjoyed by young kids and adults and played casually or non stop depending on what else you are doing with your life. These games are far cheaper to develop and distribute and have a far wider audience appeal which makes for a better return on investment for the owners and developers. They are also less costly to update with changes and improvements. The are also greater possibilities for additional in game sales that didn't exist with LAN style games. The biggest online game I'm aware of is eve (http://www.eveonline.com) which is fairly extensive and very involved from what I've heard. |

I just checked, apparently WoW (us.battle.net) has about 7.7 million subscribers and Eve has about 500,000 |
